Fredrikstad: Isegran, the Glomma and fortress history

Fredrikstad reveals its distinctive character along the Glomma: at its centre lies Isegran Island, where the river divides between Gamlebyen, the town centre, Cicignon and Kråkerøy. Maritime heritage, fortress architecture and self-guided routes offer different ways to explore. When choosing a holiday rental, consider whether you are most interested in museums and historic sites, the history of the river, or routes through the town and its surroundings.

Isegran: maritime history and views

Isegran is easy to reach on foot, by ferry and by bicycle. If you plan to take the ferry, check the current timetable in advance. The island’s maritime character includes a museum harbour with traditional boats and a centre for building and restoring wooden boats. Håpets katedral is an art and environmental project that is open to everyone.

The buildings also tell stories of different eras: Isegranhuset, also known as Det Gule Huset and Empirehuset, was built in 1730 and is considered the oldest surviving wooden building in Østfold. The stone tower on Isegran, over 300 years old, has been converted into an observation tower. From there, you can see the Fredrikstad Bridge, Gamlebyen and the river as it flows towards the open sea via Lera.

Those interested in Edvard Munch can explore the themed trail that begins on Isegran and leads to six places in Fredrikstad with which Munch had a special connection. The starting point combines this exploration with a visit to the island; the other stops are located in different parts of Fredrikstad.

Gamlebyen: fortress, museum and town life

Gamlebyen in Fredrikstad is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Northern Europe. Kongsten Fort was built in 1685 and is considered one of Norway’s best-preserved bastion fortresses. A covered passage that has survived to this day connects the fort to the main fortress, and visitors can follow it. The grounds are open to visitors year-round and are suitable for exploring history, relaxing and attending cultural events. Separate conditions may apply to indoor spaces and events.

The Fredrikstad Museum is located in Tøihuset in Gamlebyen. It offers three exhibitions, a small museum shop and the history bar Bar 1567. There is also plenty to explore outside the museum: shops, galleries and a flea market offer opportunities for shopping. Individual shop offerings and market dates may change.

Compare walking routes and experiences

Elvelangs is a self-guided town walk along the Glomma in central Fredrikstad. Its 16 stops and signage offer insights into the history, everyday life and architecture along the river. Glommastien offers a different perspective: it runs between Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg on both sides of the Glomma, through a cultural landscape worthy of preservation. Reminders of the area’s former sawmill and brickmaking industries shape the landscape; rest areas, distinctive posts and signs are part of the route.

For a shorter walk, Bjørneløypa is another option: the 2nd Dam in Fredrikstadmarka is the starting and ending point for this circular route of about one kilometre. The trail has a variety of surfaces, and animal sculptures line the way. At Gamlebyen Modelljernbanesenter, a miniature model depicts Gamlebyen. In summer, visitors can also enjoy a 14-metre-long train ride through the old town; check the current dates for your trip.

Getting there and choosing the right location

Gamlebyen is centrally located in Fredrikstad and is easy to reach by bus, car, bicycle and on foot. Parking is available within the old town, but spaces are limited. Parking outside the old town at Kongsten is recommended as an alternative. Traffic and parking conditions may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before you travel.
