Bagn
Accommodation in Bagn
Bagn brings together a long church history, the Begna River and an open-air museum nearby. You can shape your stay in many different ways: by exploring historic architectural styles, visiting a museum, going for a hike or spending time by the water. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is also worth first considering which of these aspects of the area interests you most.
Church history in Bagn and Østre Bagn
Bagn kyrkje in the town centre is a cruciform church dating from 1736. Its architectural style and precise date of construction give it a different historical context from the earlier Ule Church. This was a stave church with a raised central space and stood in Østre Bagn, in the municipality of Sør-Aurdal. It is also known as Bagn stavkyrkje. A letter from 1375 mentions the parish of Bagn as “Bagns kirkiu sookn a Waldræs” — an early written reference to the parish.
If you are interested in different church styles and the history of the area, these names and dates can serve as a thread for exploring Bagn. The present-day Bagn kyrkje is accessible via a turnoff from the E16 in the town centre. A marked path to the Ulekyrkjetomta leads from county road 219. A memorial stone and a simple wooden cross mark the site of the former church. Together, the preserved church and the site of the former stave church offer two different ways to learn about Bagn’s church history.
Open-air museum and places of remembrance
Five kilometres south of Bagn, on the E16 in the municipality of Sør-Aurdal, lies Bagn Bygdesamling. The open-air museum now comprises 19 buildings. These include a farmhouse from Islandsmoen, a telthus from Vangen in Bagn, a tenant farmer’s house from the vicarage in Bagn and the school from Dølven. The various buildings offer concrete examples of the municipality’s architectural and local history.
The museum features several permanent indoor exhibitions, films and an audio station. You can therefore do more than look at the buildings; you can also explore exhibitions and audiovisual content. Bagnsbergatn is a national war memorial and part of Bagn Bygdesamling. Anyone wishing to explore the area’s history through buildings, exhibitions and a place of remembrance will find several points of interest here.
The Begna, hiking trails and time outdoors
The Begna flows south from Bagn in Valdres towards Nes in Ådal. The river is easily accessible from both banks via the E16 and Austsidevegen. In Bagn, there is a bathing spot just below Fossen Kro. There are also signposted fishing spots and prepared fishing paths along the banks of the Begna. Depending on your interests, you can combine time by the river with swimming or fishing.
Bagnsbergatn is also near the destination and is accessible to hikers year-round. The route starts with an approximately 550-metre gravel or tractor track, followed by a signposted path. This distance refers to the first section; on its own, it does not indicate the length of the entire hike. If you would rather spend your days hiking than visiting museums, this offers a different focus from the historic sites in and south of Bagn.
Choose the right focus for your stay
The places described differ both in subject and location: Bagn kyrkje is in the town centre, Bagn Bygdesamling is five kilometres to the south, and the Begna offers opportunities to spend time by the water. When looking for a holiday apartment in Bagn, consider which of these experiences matters most to you. This lets you choose your accommodation to suit your plans without combining culture, the river and hikes into a single excursion destination.
