Granavollen is the only place in Norway where two medieval churches stand side by side. The Søsterkirkene were built in the 12th century and are located on the pilgrimage route to Nidaros. Their unique significance stems both from the proximity of the two churches and their location along this historic route. Another striking building is Steinhuset: it is the only secular medieval stone building still standing in the Norwegian countryside.

The Granavollen–Tingelstad–Røykenvika cultural landscape also shapes the character of the area. It has been designated a nationally valuable cultural landscape since 1994 and a selected cultural landscape since 2020. Numerous farm tracks, Gutu paths and hiking trails there are used for recreation and travel. In this way, paths and cultural heritage form part of Gran’s character in the same area, and a visit need not be limited to a single attraction.

Museum and Living Craft Traditions

Hadeland Folkemuseum is set in a historic landscape along the pilgrimage route. As an open-air museum, it includes a hilly museum park with more than 30 historic buildings from the Hadeland region. Visitor experiences include the old medieval church in Tingelstad, which is protected as a historic monument and can be entered. During the summer months, the museum offers guided tours daily; the shop and café are also open then. As this is a seasonal offering, check the dates before your visit.

At Grinakervev, you can book a guided tour of the mechanical weaving mill; confirm availability before your trip. The mill produces textiles for interiors and clothing. Grinakervev also preserves traditional Norwegian weaving patterns that were once woven in many parts of the country. The craft thus connects present-day production with an older weaving tradition that was once more widespread.

Hiking and Enjoying the Water

There are trails with different focuses for hiking. DNT Hadeland has established a connected, waymarked hiking trail network throughout the municipality of Gran. The Pilegrimssenter Granavollen, together with the RiHaTo pilgrimage association, offers open hikes of various distances throughout the year. Individual hikes and the availability of a guide may vary. The Pilegrimssenter is also an information and visitor centre for pilgrims; staffing and opening hours may vary by season. A waymarked cultural trail with information boards follows the route on Sølvsberget. Trail conditions and signs may change.

The waterscape offers its own highlights: Fjorda consists of several small and large bodies of water connected by straits and natural channels. The largest body of water is called Velmunden. Fjorda offers opportunities for paddling and enjoying nature; several designated camping sites add to what is available. These opportunities are associated with Bjoneroa and the Gran side of Randsfjorden.

The Ulsnestangen bathing area in Røykenvika is one of Gran’s municipal bathing spots. It has sandy beaches, a bathing jetty, a sand volleyball court, a playground and a toilet. Facilities may change; check the conditions before your visit.
