Myklebostad: Hiking Trails, Rusvika and Ofotfjord
Accommodation in Myklebostad
Myklebostad on Tjeldøya combines marked hiking trails with activities in Rusvika and a connection to the Ofotfjord. A hike up Trollfjellet can start here; Rusvika has a beach and other ways to spend time outdoors. Media Thule invites visitors to reflect on the fjord and mountains. When choosing a holiday rental, your preferred itinerary can therefore be a useful guide: if you want to start a trail in Myklebostad, the location is a good starting point; for the beach and other outdoor activities, Rusvika is the specific destination named.
Hiking Trails and High Points
The hike up Trollfjellet can start in Myklebostad. From there, a marked trail continues for quite some distance. Another trail in the 8FL8-MÅL network starts at Myklebostad Kulturhus, crosses the bog to Langholten, and is one of the routes to Raudurtinden. This gives you a choice between a named starting point in the village and a route across the bog to another destination.
The 8FL8-MÅL network has eight destinations with trails of varying difficulty. There is a box at each destination where hikers can sign in. Helligbrua, a suspension bridge over the outlet of Tindvannet, is close to hiking destination 6 in the network, at around 300 metres above sea level. Myklebostad on Tjeldøya also has an outdoor bouldering facility. Check current trail markings and conditions before setting out; conditions on hiking trails in particular can change with the seasons.
Rusvika: Beach and Outdoor Activities
Rusvika is on Tjeldøya, two kilometres west of Myklebostad. This varied, scenic outdoor area is easy to reach and is suitable for hiking and swimming. Other possible activities there include fishing, boat trips, climbing and camping. The beach slopes gently into the water and is suitable for children. This gives families a specific point of reference when planning their day, without requiring every excursion to be the same kind: a marked trail can start in Myklebostad, while Rusvika brings together several outdoor activities in one named location.
Media Thule and the Ofotfjord
Media Thule is located in Rusvik, Myklebostad. A path leads there from the car park. The site is designed as a place where visitors can linger for a while and reflect on the fjord and mountains, offering a quieter change of pace from hiking and outdoor activities.
Myklebostad harbour is also a useful landmark for anglers: fishing spots and grounds in the Ofotfjord are not far away. Cod and saithe are the easiest fish to catch in these fishing grounds. Which species are available varies by season and conditions. Anyone planning to fish should take this seasonal variation into account.
Getting There by Car
You can reach Myklebostad by car from the E10 via Fv. 824 and Ramsund Bridge. From there, continue to Tjeldøya; at the signposted junction, turn towards Myklebostad. The drive from Ramsund Bridge takes about 20 minutes. Check road conditions and signs before travelling.
Culture and Nature in the Wider Tjeldsund Destination
The wider Tjeldsund destination also has distinctive natural and cultural attractions. Tennvatn Nature Reserve has international Ramsar status. The Tjeldsund Museum is housed in an old school building in Stokke on Tjeldøya, with a classroom and a teacher’s and sexton’s residence dating from 1869.
Steinsland Klyngetun includes a farmhouse dating from 1840 and an exhibition about Regine Normann. It displays 2,000 objects in an authentic setting from around 1920. Archaeological finds also shape the regional context: the remains of a boathouse near Sand are about 40 metres long and are among the largest discovered in Northern Norway. The Steinsvik sword was found in a grave dating from the early 9th century and is considered unique in the Nordic context.
