Namdalseid: Nature, Mountains and Culture

Namdalseid brings together nature and culture, appealing to a range of holiday interests. The Hemna Nature Reserve in the municipality stretches from the sea to an altitude of 650 metres; a wooden church dating from 1858 stands near the village, and mountain destinations such as Jektheia are nearby. The Hemna Nature Reserve in the municipality

The Hemna Nature Reserve extends from Hemnåa in the municipality of Namdalseid in the west to the Løgnin fjord arm in the municipality of Namsos in the east. It covers 12,886 decares and ranges from sea level to an altitude of 650 metres. The protected area therefore spans two municipalities and a wide range of elevations. The Løgnin fjord arm lies in Namsos; the reserve’s extent describes a landscape across municipal boundaries.

Wooden church and architectural history

Namdalseid Church is about 0.6 kilometres southwest of the village of Namdalseid. Built in 1858, the wooden church has a long-plan layout and 290 seats. It has the Norwegian heritage status “listeført,” which applies to buildings dating from after 1850. The long plan refers to a church form laid out lengthwise; together with its year of construction and building material, it provides a specific architectural point of interest for culturally minded holidaymakers.

Mountain destinations and activities

The area around Jektheia is suitable for family outings and cross-country skiing. Jektheia is 478 metres high; the route to the summit is popular with people who enjoy randonnée skiing. Another high point is 396-metre-high Våttåheia in Namdalseid. Jektheia is therefore 82 metres higher. Øyensskavlen, in the Øyenskavlen Nature Reserve, is also nearby. Together, these mountains and protected areas offer nature and activity options for different kinds of holiday days.

Namsos as a distinct regional highlight

In the wider destination of Namsos, the town lies where the Namsen River flows into the fjord. The Kunstmuseet NordTrøndelag art museum is located in the Kulturhuset in Namsos. It presents contemporary Norwegian art in a varied exhibition programme; an open workshop offers activities for adults and children. As exhibition and workshop programmes may change, it is worth checking what is currently on offer before visiting.

Namsos also has something to offer visitors with other interests: the Fosnes Bygdemuseum near Dun on Jøa is a small open-air museum about rural history. The Klompen Pavilion offers a viewpoint overlooking the town of Namsos. The Namsos–Namsos circular cycling route via Vemundvik is 26 kilometres long. Stolpejakten is a free, accessible orienteering and activity concept that takes place in Namsos during the summer half of the year, starting on 1 June.
