Discover Fiskarstranda: Trails, lakes and nature
Accommodation in Fiskarstranda
At Fiskarstranda, two named trails take you through different landscapes: one has rocky terrain and roots underfoot, while the other passes several fishing lakes. The distance and other features of the routes can also help you plan your outings according to your interests.
Trails and lakes near Fiskarstranda
The “Fiskarstrandhyttene” trail runs mostly over rocky terrain and roots. Parking is available for this trail at Rørstadmarka School in Fiskarstrand, where there are good parking facilities. The described terrain gives you a concrete indication of what to expect from this route.
The “Gjølevatnet fra Fiskarstranda” route is 2.7 kilometres long and passes several fishing lakes. It is well signposted and marked, and suitable for mountain bikes. There are areas for picking mushrooms and berries along the trail; at times, the lakes have abundant birdlife. Benches and fire pits are also located along the route.
Most of this route runs through a nature reserve or conservation zone. The route description therefore offers several concrete perspectives on the same trail: its length and markings help you find your way, while the lakes, birdlife and natural areas mentioned describe its landscape. Its suitability for mountain bikes is another feature of this route, not of the “Fiskarstrandhyttene” trail.
More to explore in the wider destination of Sula
The wider destination of Sula offers cultural attractions and excursions too. D/S Thorolf is Scandinavia’s oldest surviving wooden steamship and was built in 1910–1911. Its home port is in Langevåg, by Devoldfabrikken. Devoldbanen is considered Norway’s largest model railway and is open every Saturday from 12:00 to 16:00. Check these opening hours before your trip, as they may change.
Nature and outdoor activities are also part of Sula: Vardane is the island’s highest point, and the trail there is accessible year-round. In winter, groomed ski trails lead to the mountain cabins Taustua and Rollonhytta; one of the trails leads to Taustua. Near Kjellingset, a relatively short and easy circular walk combines a well-maintained trail with a gravel road. Kjellingset is also part of a larger cultural landscape with traces of settlement dating from the Migration Period to around 1780.
For families, Kraftverket Aktivitetspark offers more than 800 m² of obstacle courses, slides, a bouldering wall and climbing frames for children, teenagers and adults. Another kind of excursion destination is the recreation area at Vassetvatnet, which includes swimming spots, shelters, a jungle playground, disc golf, a Tufte park and picnic areas. These attractions are part of the wider destination of Sula and should be distinguished from the trails described near Fiskarstranda.
