Stranda offers several options for a trip: the centre is home to an octagonal wooden church and a short walking trail; the Barlia og Skaffarhaugen route passes through wooded terrain to a viewpoint overlooking the fjord. Nearby, a ski resort and winter sports opportunities add to the appeal. You can consider whether you want your holiday apartment to be well suited to walks in town, hikes or planned days on the slopes.

Short walks and a hiking route with fjord views

Elvastien is in the centre of Stranda. The easy, accessible trail is considered suitable for all age groups and is 0.55 kilometres each way. The route has an elevation gain of seven metres and takes about 20 minutes. It is lit on dark evenings and can also be walked then. If you would like to fit a manageable walk into your day, you’ll find specific information here about its length, elevation gain and duration.

The Barlia og Skaffarhaugen hiking route is different: it starts at Stranda’s stadium and runs for about one kilometre each way through wooded terrain and past the residential area. The route is in a protected recreational area. A detour along a path leads to the summit of Skaffarhaugen, where a viewpoint looks north towards the fjord. This gives you a choice between a short central trail and a longer hike with an additional detour.

Stranda kyrkje and an altarpiece from an earlier era

Stranda kyrkje, also known as Sløgstad kyrkje, stands in the heart of the centre. The octagonal wooden church dates from 1838 and was consecrated on 30 September. Another historic detail is its altarpiece, which is believed to date from around 1500. Alongside the walking trails, the church and altarpiece offer a cultural point of interest. If you enjoy combining nature experiences with culture, you can take both into account when choosing the focus of your holiday. The central location of the church and Elvastien makes accommodation in the centre a useful search criterion if you particularly want to visit these two places.

Ski touring, freeriding and nearby activities

Uteguiden offers several courses in Stranda. The three-day advanced ski touring course covers avalanche awareness, tour planning, equipment and safe route planning. The basic ski touring course is aimed especially at skiers with little experience of ski touring in alpine terrain. The basic freeride course covers techniques for loose snow and avalanche awareness. The advanced freeride course is for people who have completed the basic course, as well as experienced off-piste skiers with basic technique.

Nearby, Stranda Ski Resort has seven ski lifts, a conveyor belt, a children’s park, a terrain park and 18 runs. The resort’s summer ball court becomes an ice rink in winter. These activities are quite different from the walking and hiking trails in town. If skiing or freeriding is at the centre of your trip, you can also consider the role you want Stranda and the nearby area to play in your planned activities when looking for a holiday apartment.

Getting to Strandafjellet

From Ålesund Airport Vigra or Hovden Airport in Ørsta, continue to Strandafjellet by bus or car. Stova 1957 is also nearby, having opened in November 2021. The building houses a ticket office, ski service, ski rental, a restaurant and a café. This information can help you plan if your trip includes Strandafjellet; it describes facilities there, not amenities in a holiday apartment.
