Around Godøy, you’ll find coastal paths, distinctive mountain trails and cultural attractions such as the Godøy Coastal Museum and the lighthouse in Alnes. The excursions vary considerably, ranging from beach walks to exposed sections along steep cliffs. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether you’d like your stay to focus on the coast, hiking or culture.

Coast, beach and a path through the forest

Alnes has both sandy and pebble beaches; Sandvika is one of the sandy beaches. Beach walks along Alnessanden on the west side of Godøya continue as far as Juv. This gives you a coastal route for walks as an alternative to the mountain trails.

Fjellfotvegen is a gently undulating, gravel hiking trail between Juv in the west and the residential area of Leitebakken in the east. It passes through pine and hazel forests as well as planted spruce stands, and offers views of the sea, fjord and mountains. After about 500 metres, the trail crosses the turnoff to Alnesvatnet; from there, further hiking options lead to Storhornet or Rantane. You can fish for small trout in Alnesvatnet on Godøya, but a fishing licence is required. Check the applicable fishing rules and permits in advance.

Hikes with different character

There are marked hiking trails on Godøyfjellet from Alnes and Juv. Trails of varying difficulty lead from Godøy and Alnes to the summit of Storehornet, at an elevation of 497 metres. The Godøya–Storrunden starts in Gjuv and follows a natural ridge or terrain edge along the south and west sides of Godøya. It offers spectacular views, an open-sea experience and exposed sections along very steep cliffs. From Storhornet on Godøya, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama.

The trails have different characteristics: Fjellfotvegen is gently undulating and gravelled, while the Godøya–Storrunden has exposed sections along steep cliffs. A rock on this route can be slippery even on warm days, particularly in the morning and evening when dew forms. Take this advice into account when planning your outing, and check conditions before setting off.

Fishing and coastal history at the museum

The Godøy Coastal Museum’s exhibits are spread across three floors of an older school building. They also include an old pilot’s station from the 19th century, as well as traditional boats and boat engines in the boathouse. Topics covered include fish receiving stations, the drying of clipfish and whaling. The basement focuses in particular on fishing and coastal fisheries along the Sunnmøre coast, as well as the history of longline fishing; it also features a film. A collection on wartime history and an exhibition about the Eilefrøysa burial mound complete the museum’s offerings.

Alnes: lighthouse, art and café

Alnes was once one of the largest fishing villages in the entire Sunnmøre region. It is home to a protected lighthouse: the original structure was built in 1852 and operated by the local population. The current lighthouse dates from 1937 and is 22 metres tall.

Visitors can climb the old lighthouse via steep stairs. On the way up, they pass an art exhibition by Ørnulf Opdahl; admission is charged. Guided tours of the protected lighthouse building are offered in summer or on request. Check the current arrangements for visits before planning a tour or climb.

The café at the Alnes Fyr and Experience Centre sells locally produced food and cakes; its lighthouse cake is considered famous. The café’s specific offerings may vary. The experiences around Alnes complement one another: the coastal landscape, fishing village history, art and lighthouse can each provide a different focus for your stay.
