In Bruhagen, river landscape and cultural history come together. The Strømselva flows from Storvatnet through a smaller wetland and agricultural land before reaching the village. From Bruhagen sentrum, it flows into Straumsvågen, a brackish-water bay with a narrow connection to the sea through Kristvika. The waterways, wetland and cultivated landscape are therefore as much a part of the village’s character as its historic buildings.

River Nature and a Short Hiking Trail

The Stikk-UT! hike in Bruhagen is short and follows the Straumselva, passing the Bedehuset along the way. The trail runs through a green oasis; birdsong, plants and animals are part of the natural scenery by the river. If you like to include nature watching and exercise in your travel plans, you’ll find a specific excursion spot right in the village. The river and surrounding nature also provide opportunities for nature experiences, relaxation, play and observing wildlife and plant life.

Another trail in Bruhagen is simply prepared. It can be muddy on wet days, so good shoes are recommended. Keep this practical detail in mind when planning your day. The Strømselva is part of a watercourse where the freshwater pearl mussel occurs. The dragonfly Cordulegaster boltonii is also said to have been observed several times near Bruhagen. If you’re interested in waterways and wildlife, you can also encounter a distinctive natural history of the area; however, reports of the dragonfly sightings remain uncertain.

School History and Architecture

Varde was completed in 1920 and served as a school until the 1970s. The building is a regionally significant monument to school history and is one of the few surviving school complexes in Møre og Romsdal. Bruhagen thus offers a direct connection to the region’s school history. Bjørsholbua adds another dimension: this local heritage building, dating from 1922, was built in the style of the period as a combined residence and commercial building. The two buildings represent different aspects of the village’s historic character.

Near Bruhagen, Gammelfossen lies by Storvatnet and is a regionally significant monument to the history of technology and industry. The complex includes a large mill, residential buildings, a birdhouse and a garden. Gammelfossen therefore represents a different historical focus from Varde and Bjørsholbua. The Bruhagen area also includes automatically protected settlement and activity sites from the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the pre-Reformation period. A total of 28 finds are recorded for the listed sites.

Bus Services and Choosing a Location

Public transport can also be a factor when choosing a place to stay. FRAM bus route 501 runs between Kristiansund, Bruhagen, Ba and Kårvåg. Route 503 runs between Bruhagen, Kvernes and Kårvåg. The timetables for both routes are valid from 17 August 2026 until further notice. If you’re considering Bruhagen as a base, these connections may be worth factoring into your plans; specific departure times are not provided here.

Bruhagen is considered a modern centre for culture, sport and activities, with places to meet. Alongside the river landscape, short hike and varied historical themes, it’s a place where nature and culture go hand in hand. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider which side of Bruhagen you want to shape your trip: river nature and outdoor activity, or architectural and school history. More places to consider for your trip: Kristiansund, Tingvoll, Frei, Aukra and Midsund.
