Henningsvær: Fishing Village, Art and Island Culture
Accommodation in Henningsvær
Henningsvær combines the history of an important Lofoten fishing village with art, crafts and experiences in nature. The village consists of several small islands connected to one another and to the mainland by bridges. This means that when choosing where to spend your holiday, it is not just the scenery that matters: fishing and culture also shape what you can discover in Henningsvær.
A protected fishing village with a history of its own
Henningsvær played an important role in the fishing history of Lofoten and is considered the best-preserved fishing village in the archipelago. The village is a cultural heritage site of national importance and is one of Norway’s 13 protected cultural environments. The protection is intended to preserve one of the country’s most important fishing villages. This designation makes fishing history an important part of the village’s character and cultural identity.
The historic KaviarFactory offers another link between past and present: it now houses international contemporary art and is also an important monument to Lofoten’s fishing industry. Visitors interested in the village’s development can also find historical connections at Galleri Lofoten. The gallery by the harbour features a historical exhibition about Henningsvær, with tools and equipment from the Lofoten fisheries.
Art, architecture and crafts
Galleri Lofoten also has one of the largest collections of 19th-century paintings from Northern Norway and displays, among other works, sculptures by Nico Widerberg. Its location on the harbour quay adds a tangible connection to the maritime setting. Henningsvær Church offers a different perspective: built in 1852, it is an example of traditional Norwegian wooden architecture and a cultural and historical landmark.
Crafts are also part of Henningsvær’s character. Engelskmannsbrygga is a craft centre in the village square. Its gallery offers a wide selection, preserving traditional crafts through modern design. Work by local craftspeople includes pottery, glass objects and jewellery. The Lofoten Wool branch showcases products made from wool from local sheep, including knitting yarn, hand-knitted garments, blankets and sheepskins. Here, you can discover art, historical collections and craftsmanship as different aspects of the village’s culture.
Active days and nature experiences
For an active outing on the water, there is the two-hour Kayak Nature Safari in Henningsvær. It introduces you to the birdlife and marine life of Lofoten and is suitable even for people with little or no kayaking experience. There is said to be a high chance of spotting white-tailed eagles and other birds on the guided safari. Another option is the nature and sea eagle safari from Henningsvær, which explores the natural surroundings and wildlife around the village in large RIB boats. Several pairs of white-tailed eagles have their own territories in this area.
If you prefer to explore on foot, nearby Festvågtinden offers a steep summit hike just above Henningsvær. From there, you can look out over the village and the Vestfjord. The area is also home to a local climbing and skiing community, with its own meeting place, Klatrekafeen. The range of activities gives you the opportunity to plan your trip around what matters most to you: art and local history, experiences on the water or a challenging hike to the summit.
Getting there and a taste of the local cuisine
Taking the bus is recommended for travelling to Henningsvær. The road from the E10 to the village is narrow and can be challenging for some drivers. If you travel by car, it is recommended that you use the larger car parks and explore Henningsvær on foot. These tips may help you decide whether to plan your trip by bus or car.
The local cuisine also has a distinctive connection to the fishing history: Henningsvær is known for seafood featuring skrei cod prepared in various ways, as well as other local specialities. Together with its art, crafts and nature experiences, this makes Henningsvær an appealing holiday destination. Other places in this selection: Brettesnes, Storemolla, Kleppstad, Gimsøysand, Digermulen, Svolvær, Laukvik, Skrova.
