Dverberg mainly appeals to travellers who want to discover cultural history through specific architectural forms, places and traditional routes. Dverberg Church, the medieval cemetery and the historic pilgrim trail to Stave offer three different ways to explore the history of the place. Alveland is located in the village of Dverberg on the east coast of Andøya. This combination is useful for planning your trip: you can consider architectural history, cemetery culture and pilgrimage traditions as separate interests and decide which focus should shape your stay.

Dverberg Church

Dverberg Church is an octagonal wooden church, built in 1843 at a new location on Skottberget. The architect was Christian Heinrich Grosch (1801–1865). The construction date, 1843, falls within Grosch’s lifetime and places the church in the 19th century. “Octagonal” means that the floor plan has eight sides; this makes it possible to describe the shape clearly and without technical terms. Its protected status is also part of the building’s history: the church is automatically included in the heritage register.

Cemetery and contemporary history

Dverberg’s medieval cemetery was in use from the Middle Ages until around 1897. Its use therefore continued beyond the construction of the church in 1843: the cemetery remained in use after the new church site had been established. The church and cemetery do not therefore mark a simple sequence, but rather overlapping periods in the history of the place. The cemetery contains three iron crosses and an iron grave, or iron sarcophagus.

The historic pilgrim trail to Stave

Historically, a pilgrim trail ran from Dverberg to Stave. Parts of it are still visible; it is believed to be the only pilgrim trail north of Trondheim. The history of the route thus complements the built and burial-related history of the place: in this tradition, Dverberg is the starting point of a route with Stave as its destination. If you want to include the visible sections in your travel plans, check in advance which ones are currently accessible on foot.

Culture and travel planning

The Christmas performances in Dverberg are widely known. Alongside the architectural and historical themes, they add a seasonal highlight. Unlike the church and cemetery, a performance is an event tied to specific dates: if you are travelling specifically for one, check the dates for your travel year before planning your stay.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use your interests to help you choose: if church architecture is to shape your stay, Dverberg Church is the central theme; if you want to include the history of pilgrimage, factor the historic route to Stave into your plans. A trip centred on a Christmas performance requires checking the dates. Then compare the location of a specific accommodation with the plans that matter most to you. This way, you can link your choice of accommodation to your travel interests.
