Telavåg combines coastal walks with a poignant reminder of the Second World War. Tides, paths and historic sites each add a different focus to planning your trip. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, consider whether you’d like to spend most of your days outdoors by the sea or exploring the area’s cultural history.

Coastal paths and a special listening experience

The Ytreløypa is a constructed path that runs along the coast in Telavåg. At low tide, the path provides access to Bekhilderen cave, where you can hear the roar of the sea. This detour depends on a specific condition, so plan your visit around low tide.

Another hike starts in Telavåg and leads to Grana. It passes through easy terrain on its way out to the sea and goes by the “Fiskesleppet” climbing wall. At Grana, the focus is on the path to the sea and the climbing wall; on the Ytreløypa, it is the low-tide access to the cave. The two routes therefore offer different highlights, without requiring a specific walking time.

Telavåg’s history at the museum and around town

The North Sea Traffic Museum in Telavåg has a film about the Second World War and exhibitions about the dangerous voyage to Shetland. The “Livets portal” sculpture is made of handmade glass and Corten steel. Its placement draws attention to Telavåg’s history during the Second World War. The museum and the sculpture each explore the historical subject in a different way.

The North Sea Traffic Museum is accessible, with all areas accessible by wheelchair. The “Telavåg 1942” mobile app takes you to historic sites in Telavåg. If you’d like to use the app, check in advance whether it is currently available.

Hike to Nipafjellet and getting there

From the museum, the path first heads northeast to the foot of Nipafjellet and then west to its summit at an elevation of 89 m. The North Sea Traffic Museum also organises hikes to Nipafjellet; confirm before your trip whether one is scheduled. For directions, use this general guide: the museum is along the signposted route before Telavåg, and the drive from Bergen takes about 40 minutes.

More options in the wider destination of Øygarden

The wider destination of Øygarden also offers other landscapes to explore. Ormhilleren is an open, child-friendly recreation area with a large, sheltered swimming cove with shell sand. On the Seløy–Gløvrebu route, a marked, gently undulating path offers views of the sea, islets and skerries. There is a fire pan and small fire pits at Gløvrebu where you can take a break. The Tjeldstø–Alvheim–Hovden route offers a circular walk with a stated walking time: it is 9 kilometres long and takes about 3.5 hours.

Choose a holiday rental based on what you plan to focus on during your stay: if you’re planning the hike to Grana, its starting point is in Telavåg. A visit to Bekhilderen needs to be planned around low tide; for a museum visit, the approximate driving time from Bergen can help you plan your journey.
