Lysekloster offers several different starting points for an outing: the route up Lyshornet runs mostly through spruce forest, Munkestien is an old path, and Lysekloster Chapel was built in 1663. There is also the Storåsen circular trail, with its own starting point at the sports park. This gives you a choice between nature, the history of the paths and a place with a clearly documented date.

Lyshornet: Trailhead, terrain and getting there

The route up Lyshornet starts at the small car park by the old monastery ruins. For the first approximately 100 metres, it follows a narrow path before becoming a better trail. From there, it runs mostly through spruce forest over firm, earthy ground. When planning, you can distinguish between the narrow initial section and the mostly forested trail that follows.

Some sections can become very wet after heavy rainfall. If you are planning the hike in such weather, it may be sensible to allow for wet stretches. You can get off bus route 601 from Osøyro at the monastery ruins; the route runs as far as there. Check the current timetable before travelling. The small car park at the ruins is another specific reference point for starting the Lyshornet hike.

Munkestien: Old path and soapstone quarry

Munkestien is a 3.9 km-long old path from Lyse Kloster to Røykenes in Søfteland, passing the soapstone quarry. Here, a clearly named destination and a historic path with a specific point along the way come together. This sets Munkestien apart from the Lyshornet route, which is described primarily in terms of its starting point, the forest and the terrain. If you are interested in local history, the old path offers a direct connection to the subject.

Chapel and circular trail

Lysekloster Chapel was built in 1663 in connection with the main farm. The date and connection to the main farm give the local history a specific focus. Together with Munkestien, this offers two different historical points of interest: an old path and a chapel with a clearly stated date.

The Storåsen circular trail starts at the car park by Lysekloster Sports Park. Its circular layout sets it apart from the Munkestien route to Røykenes; for Lyshornet, by contrast, the narrow start and the nature of the terrain are highlighted. When choosing a hike, you can consider whether you prefer a circular trail, a path with a named destination, or a route with specific details about its starting point and terrain.

Choose a holiday apartment to suit your outings

When looking for a holiday apartment in Lysekloster, you can factor the different trail themes into your choice of location. Consider whether you want to focus on the route by the monastery ruins, Munkestien and its destination of Røykenes, or the Storåsen circular trail starting from the sports park. If bus route 601 from Osøyro is relevant to your journey, you can also take the stop at the monastery ruins into account; check the current timetable in advance.
