Røldal combines winter sports, hiking and historical discoveries. The town centre has a walking and cycling route that can be used year-round, as well as the Røldal Stave Church; outdoors, hiking trails lead through historic landscapes to summer pasture areas. The Røldal Ski Centre adds downhill runs, freeriding and starting points for ski tours to the mix. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can first consider whether ski days, tours or culture will be the focus of your stay.

Winter Days and Ski Tours

The Røldal Ski Centre has 15 downhill runs with a total length of 15 kilometres and a vertical drop of 650 metres. It also offers skiing off-piste and freeriding. Those who enjoy ski touring will find a popular starting point at the mountain station for numerous tours on randonnée or cross-country skis. These options offer different ways to experience winter in Røldal: on the downhill runs, freeriding or on a tour along your own route.

The Røldal–Grøndalen hiking trail can also be used differently depending on the season. The existing trail starts in the town centre and leads uphill through the terrain to a summer pasture area and back. It is described as moderate to challenging; in winter, it is also suitable for ski touring from January to May. This sets it apart from the Røldal–Austdalen–Bråstøl circular hiking trail, which is designed as a moderate day hike.

Hiking and Trails in Town

The Røldal–Austdalen–Bråstøl circular hiking trail also starts in the town centre and passes through a historic landscape with a summer pasture and dairy-farming setting. It is best suited to the period from June to October. If you are planning a day hike during this period, you can choose a trail whose character and season are specified, rather than planning a winter tour as a summer hike.

For exercise in town, there is a well-developed walking and cycling route in the centre that can be used year-round. It connects to a floodlit ski or running trail and provides access to an activity park. There is also a place to eat near the route. This offers a local option for walking and cycling alongside the longer tours.

Church, Museum and Local Stories

The Røldal Stave Church is located in the town centre and was built between 1200 and 1250. It is especially well known as a pilgrimage site. Its historical significance makes it a distinctive cultural attraction in Røldal; visitors interested in churches and pilgrimage traditions can include it in their travel plans.

The Røldal Rural Museum is located at Hauge Farm in the town centre and comprises four buildings: the main building, the barn, the smokehouse or bakehouse, and Rabbastova. Rabbastova is described as the oldest farm building in Røldal. The exhibitions show typical architecture, furnishings and tools from this period. The museum visit focuses on rural life and its built environment, while the stave church offers a different perspective on the history of the town.

The Village Loop offers another way to discover Røldal. It passes through the town centre and links small stories, art, architecture, nature and cultural history along the route. You can get the accompanying puzzle, among other places, at the Røldal Tourist Information Office, Hordatun Hotel, Seim Camping and Skysstasjonen.

Fishing and Cycling in the Surrounding Area

Rod fishing is permitted without charge in Røldalsvatnet. Good shore fishing spots are at the canal outlet by the power plant, about one kilometre south of the town centre. If you would like to spend time by the water in addition to hiking and cultural activities, this offers a specific fishing spot in the surrounding area.

A construction or service road about 10 kilometres long, running from the power plant at Røldalsvatnet to the dam in Blåbergdalen, can also be cycled. It differs from the walking and cycling route in the centre in that it leads to the dam and is approximately 10 kilometres long. When planning your trip, these details can help you choose between a loop in town, a hike and a cycling excursion.
