Norheimsund combines maritime traditions with experiences on the Hardangerfjord: At the Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter, history and traditional crafts come together in a vibrant cultural experience. There’s also a RIB safari into the Fyksesund fjord arm, an annual boat festival held at the end of June, and a fjordside trail. You can choose from crafts, events and nature experiences when planning your trip.

Discover maritime crafts

Visitors can explore the grounds of the Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter and watch craftspeople at work. If you’d like to do more than watch, you can make your own rope or carve a toy boat there. Historical image presentations are shown in the screening room. The centre offers several ways to engage with maritime cultural heritage: hands-on crafts, insights into the work and historical images.

The Hardanger Maritime Centre also focuses on practical maritime workshops. Its workshops are open year-round, while family activities are offered during the summer season. If you’re travelling with children, you can combine a visit with an interest in traditional crafts. The summer activities and the workshops that are open year-round are separate offerings.

Cultural sites and events

The centre of Norheimsund is designated as a cultural environment. It includes Tingstova and the Swiss-style section of the Sandven Hotel. If you’re interested in local history and different architectural styles, you can explore these sites as you look around the centre. In the church park by Norheimsund Church, Krossvegen runs past as an outdoor Stations of the Cross; its reliefs were created by Audun Storaas.

At the end of June, Norheimsund hosts an annual boat festival. The Hardingtonar music festival takes place at the same time. The well-equipped guest harbour also caters to boat traffic during festivals. If events are the focus of your trip, these dates and the town’s maritime character are useful points of reference when planning your holiday.

Ungdomshallen in the centre has a cinema auditorium with film screenings several times a week. This means that, alongside maritime experiences and the outdoor Stations of the Cross, Norheimsund also offers cultural activities in the town centre. These screenings are distinct from the historical image presentations in the screening room at the Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter: those focus on historical images, while films are shown at Ungdomshallen.

Fjord trip and nature experience

The “Hardangerfjord and Fyksesund Fjord Safari From Norheimsund” RIB safari starts in Norheimsund and heads into Fyksesund, a fjord arm of the Hardangerfjord. The safari includes several photo stops and commentary on local history, culture and nature. It combines a trip into the fjord arm with insights into the region.

You’ll find another nature experience nearby: Steinsdalsfossen is two kilometres in the direction of Bergen. You can walk behind the waterfall there without getting wet. If you’d like to include both culture and nature in your trip plans, you have a choice of very different experiences.

A fjordside trail runs along the Hardangerfjord from the pier or bus stop in Norheimsund; the walk takes about five minutes.
