Granvin: Lake, Nature and Cultural Heritage

Granvin combines the natural surroundings of Granvinsvatnet with striking traces of cultural history. The lake is bordered by delta areas with rare bird and plant species, while Granvin kyrkje and the Granvin bygdemuseum offer a different perspective nearby. Granvinsvatnet and its landscape

Granvinsvatnet is in the municipality of Voss in Vestland, just north of the innermost end of the Granvinfjord. The lake covers 4.3 square kilometres and lies 23 metres above sea level. High mountains surround it. Granvinsvatnet formed at the end of the last Ice Age, when a terminal moraine dammed the water. Today, the lake drains into the fjord via the fish-rich Granvinelva. Granvinsvatnet has high fish production.

The Joberget and Granvindeltaet nature reserves lie at the northern end of Granvinsvatnet. Rare and demanding bird and plant species occur in the delta areas. Joberget Nature Reserve lies on the north side of the lake and comprises 400 decares of elm-lime forest with warmth-loving flora. Different aspects of nature therefore come together at the lake: the delta areas and their biodiversity on the one hand, and the forest and its plant life on the other. National Road 13 runs along the eastern side of Granvinsvatnet and offers another point of reference in the landscape.

Enjoy the water and get out and about

Granvinsvatnet is recommended for swimming when it is ice-free. The lake bed is gravelly, so socks or shoes are advisable to protect your feet. Swimming opportunities depend on the season and weather. Check local conditions before swimming. This makes time in the water a weather-dependent part of your trip planning, rather than something to assume is possible regardless of the time of year.

A named route also connects sights in the area: “Granvin - Ulvik - Allmenningsvegen - via Furesetvegen” starts at the bus stop by Granvin kyrkje. Along the way, it offers views of Granvinsvatnet and towards Vassenden. The route and swimming appeal to different interests: the former focuses on views and scenery along the way, while the latter centres on the water itself and the conditions that make swimming suitable.

A church and museum as cultural attractions

Granvin kyrkje, on the lakeshore, is a typical example of 18th-century church architecture and is considered an important cultural monument because of its history and age. Its richly decorated, culturally and historically interesting interior also makes it a special feature of the area. The Granvin bygdemuseum in Eide, in the centre of Granvin, displays Johan Havaas’s botanical collection as well as examples of older building styles. The church and museum complement the focus on nature in different ways: one represents historic religious architecture, while the other combines botany with insights into earlier forms of construction.
