Ramnanger: Trails, Views and History
Accommodation in Ramnanger
When planning your holiday, it is worth exploring the area around Ramnanger, where trail destinations combine views with traces of history. Åsebøkverna is about 3 km from the centre of Ramnanger; free roadside parking is available there. Another point of reference is the Aasebø–Fromreide stage, which passes through Ramnanger.
Stages and Trails Nearby
The Aasebø–Fromreide stage follows the illuminated trail by Siglingavatnet and is 9 km long in total. The stage is estimated to take about 2–3 hours. The route description, published on 19 March 2025, lists it as open year-round and rates it as moderately difficult; local conditions may vary. The distance and time estimate refer to the entire stage, not just the section that passes Ramnanger.
In Siglingavatnet Outdoor Recreation Park, there are trails and turf houses in addition to the illuminated trail; canoe rental and cultural heritage sites are also among the offerings. The loop in the park is 5.2 kilometres in total. This information appears on the municipal website, updated on 27 February 2026. The park has its own car park; parking is also available at Heiarvang Grendahus in Nordre Haugland. In a post dated 21 February 2025, Askøy municipality described the illuminated trail as a route used by children and adults, joggers and people with reduced mobility.
Views and History Nearby
At Siglingavatnet Outdoor Recreation Park, you can see animals up close. The 12-metre-high Kjerrgardstårnet offers a good view. The site’s history also includes a memorial connected with a plane crash during the Second World War. Nature watching and remembrance of a specific historical event thus come together in the same park.
Another nearby destination is the Åsebøåsen viewpoint. There are benches there and an information sign about the history of a bomb crater. Parking for the hike to Åsebøåsen is listed at the asphalt plant. If you would like to include views and history in your day’s plans, there are two distinct options: the tower and memorial in the park, and the viewpoint with its information about the bomb crater.
Askøy as a Wider Travel Destination
Within the wider destination of Askøy, Askøy på langs offers a longer perspective: the route is about 37 kilometres long and crosses varied terrain from Kleppestø, over the island’s highest points and through its densest forests, to Herdla. This is a different scale from the 9-kilometre Aasebø–Fromreide stage, which passes Ramnanger. The two distances help distinguish a single stage from a route that crosses Askøy over a longer distance.
Herdla adds opportunities for nature watching to this broader view of Askøy: more than 240 bird species have been recorded there over time, and birdwatching is one of the activities mentioned. When visiting, note that access is prohibited in parts of the Herdla Nature Reserve and in the seabird reserves from 15 April to 30 September. Follow the current signs and regulations on site.
Cultural Heritage Sites on Askøy
The wider destination of Askøy also offers various points of interest for those interested in cultural history. Mindehuset in Ask is a protected building dating from the mid-18th century. Open days and guided tours for schools and kindergartens are offered; private tours can be arranged. In Strusshamn, you can experience history through the village and its buildings, museum visits, and cultural activities for associations and organisations. The Askøy Museum Association maintains permanent and changing collections at Sjoddien.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Ramnanger, these differences can help guide your holiday planning: the stage that passes through the area and nearby destinations sit alongside longer routes and cultural heritage sites in the wider destination of Askøy. This can help you decide whether your trip will focus on a single route, views and nature watching, or include broader nature and cultural destinations as well.
