Gorge and protected area

In Rendalen, striking landscapes stand alongside traces of human history. Jutulhogget is particularly remarkable: the gorge has walls up to 240 metres high and is between 150 and 500 metres wide. At the western end, there is a car park, toilets and places to rest. A good path leads to Veslehogget and into central parts of the gorge; several viewpoints along the entire northern edge look down into it. This lets you decide whether to view the gorge from a lookout or explore further along the path during your stay.

The Sølen Landscape Protection Area covers 456.4 km² and lies entirely within Rendalen Municipality. It was established by royal decree on 8 February 2011. The area is intended to offer nature and landscape experiences through simple, low-impact outdoor activities, with limited infrastructure development. In addition to its landscapes, Sølen also contains cultural monuments and traces of cultural history, including, in particular, traces of trapping systems for reindeer and moose. You can therefore consider nature and history as different interests when planning your trip.

Pilgrimage trail and summit circuit

A marked pilgrimage trail enters Rendalen from the southeast and ends in Åkrestrømmen. Along the way, the route passes Munkbetsetra, goes by Søndre Osdalssjøen and through Osdalen; it then continues via Østvollen and Renåtangen, as well as Søljerøsta. The sequence of named places can help with your planning if you would like to explore the route of this pilgrimage trail. Another trace of pilgrimage is the Åkrestein: numerous pilgrims have carved marks into the stone. It is considered one of the few enduring records left by pilgrims in Norway.

For those considering a mountain hike, Renåfjellet offers a circuit over three summits: Tøråsen reaches 874 metres, Renåfjellet 1,028 metres and Renåskarven 962 metres. The total distance is about 20 kilometres. Renåfjellet also has a ski area with its own snowmaking system.

Water, fishing and activities

Sana is a sandy beach at the northern end of Storsjøen. For visitors interested in fishing, the lodge at the entrance to Fiskevollen sells fishing permits for angling, otter fishing and net fishing during much of the summer season. It also sells kiosk goods and rents out boats. Fiskevollen also has boathouses and fishing cabins on Sølensjøen. Another option is a guided fishing trip on the Mistra, offering guided wobbler and spinning fishing.

There is also a dedicated option for visitors staying with a dog: you can book a time at Møregga Dog Park. The fenced area covers more than 6,500 m² and allows dogs to run freely. Mefurua, meanwhile, is Rendalen Municipality’s only state-secured outdoor recreation area; it has several buildings for overnight stays. These different options offer a range of themes for planning your trip, from fishing to spending time outdoors.

Culture and local cuisine

Rendalstunet includes the Old Berger School, Gammelskola; the Bull Museum, also known as Prestegårdstunet, with eight buildings; and Bergslia with four buildings. The Bull Museum is located in the listed vicarage where the writer Jacob Breda Bull grew up. Rendalstunet also has a café and a country store selling local products. Those interested in history can include this place in their plans for a stay, while the café and country store offer another way to experience the local area.

Another historic building is Kløftkoia. It was built around 1915 and used by forestry workers until the 1950s. After being restored, it was opened to everyone as an accessible outdoor recreation facility offering nature and cultural experiences. Traditional local dishes are served in Åkrådalen, with an emphasis on whitefish from Sølensjøen and game from the forests and mountains of Rendalen. The Åkrestrømmen village festival, also known as Rendalsdagene, takes place every year in mid-July, in calendar week 28.

When looking for a holiday rental in Rendalen, you can start by considering which of these travel interests matter most to you during your stay. This lets you choose a location based on the experiences you actually want to include, rather than selecting accommodation without considering the kind of trip you want.

For further orientation, the places of Åkrestrømmen, Rendalen, Hanestad and Sjølisand are also included.
