Folldal – Industrial Heritage, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Folldal
Folldal is a destination for anyone looking to combine cultural history with outdoor activities. An active museum, marked trails, historic traces, cross-country ski trails and water activities offer a variety of ideas for your stay. Trail lengths also provide a useful point of reference: the Helsestien is 2.9 kilometres long and suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs; the circular trail at Stormoegga is 9.8 kilometres long.
Industrial Heritage and Historic Traces
Folldal Mines is an active museum with exhibitions and marked trails. It is one of 15 sites in Norway’s preservation programme for technical and industrial heritage. During your visit, you can also ride a train through Stoll 1. The Helsestien starts at the area by Folldal Mines and adds another option for spending time outdoors. Its length of 2.9 kilometres and its suitability for wheelchair users and pushchairs are useful features if you are looking for a trail to suit different needs.
Another cultural attraction is Folldal Bygdetun, an open-air museum in Folldal. Grimsbu is also home to large historic trapping systems dating from the Iron Age or the Middle Ages. They include several dozen trapping pits and offer a distinctive connection to the area’s history. Alongside the museum and open-air museum, historic traces in the landscape are another theme to consider on your trip.
For a meal near Folldal Mines, Gruvekroa serves traditional dishes featuring regional flavours and ingredients, as well as a simple café menu. This adds a culinary dimension to exploring the area, so a visit need not be limited to exhibitions and trails.
Trails and Winter Activities
The circular trail at Stormoegga is 9.8 kilometres long. It starts and ends at the Stormoegga ski jump and includes eleven stops with information boards about natural and cultural-historical attractions in the surrounding area. Together with the 2.9-kilometre-long Helsestien, it gives you a choice of two trails of clearly different lengths; the Helsestien is also stated to be suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs.
For winter sports, Folldal has a total of 120 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, groomed by machine or snowmobile. The Stormoegga Ski Arena has a biathlon stadium and a roller-ski track. This gives you two different winter options: the ski trails and the sports facilities. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the trails, the ski arena’s facilities, or the walking routes and cultural attractions.
Nature and Activities on the Water
Parts of Rondane National Park lie within the municipality of Folldal. Of the municipality’s 1,276-square-kilometre area, 86 percent is protected by conservation regulations or lies within various buffer zones. There are around 20 fishing lakes in the Folldal commons. Folldal’s natural environment therefore ranges from protected areas to fishing lakes.
The Kroktjønna recreation area is in Grimsbu and has a bathing spot with a sandy beach. The area is also used for paddling and fishing. If you are interested in water activities, Kroktjønna offers several specific options: swimming at the sandy beach, paddling and fishing.
