Karasjok offers different ways to explore Sámi culture and history: at the cultural history museum, in Sápmi Park and on guided tours at the Sámi Parliament. There is also a municipal ski centre, Karasjok alpinanlegg. Those planning a stay can therefore consider cultural discoveries and sporting activities as distinct highlights of the destination.

Sámi Culture at the Museum and in Sápmi Park

Sámiid Vuorká-Dávvirat – De Samiske Samlinger is a Sámi cultural history museum in Karasjok. It comprises a main building and an open-air museum. Founded in 1972, it was the first Sámi museum and the first Sámi cultural institution in Norway. A visit therefore offers a look at the history of one institution alongside the broader subject of Sámi cultural history.

De Samiske Samlinger manages more than 5,000 objects relating to Sámi cultural history. These include traditional clothing, religion, duodji and art from across Sápmi. This variety gives the museum a broad thematic scope: tradition, belief, crafts and art are all part of the same cultural history, without the subject being limited to a single area.

At Sápmi Park, visitors can experience Sámi culture and history in an entertaining and engaging way. The park includes the Magical Theatre. It also presents reindeer herding through Siida. Alongside the museum’s cultural-historical perspective, visitors can therefore explore a theatre attraction and learn about reindeer herding as distinct topics.

Sámi handicrafts are also available at Sápmi Park. For a culinary addition, the park’s Storgammen restaurant serves Sámi cuisine. Cultural history, crafts and cuisine each offer their own emphasis; together, they showcase different aspects of Sámi culture.

Guided Tours and Library at the Sámi Parliament

The Sámi Parliament in Kárášjohka/Karasjok offers scheduled drop-in guided tours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. No advance booking is required, and admission is free. The tours are offered in Norwegian, Sámi and English and last about 30 minutes. When planning this activity, you can choose from the three languages offered and take the approximate duration into account when organising your day.

The Sámi Parliament’s library has reading and study spaces available to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It offers a different way to engage than the guided tours: the focus is on places to read and study, with specified public opening hours during the day.

Another Highlight: the Municipal Ski Centre

Karasjok alpinanlegg is a municipally operated ski centre. The ski lift run is 792 metres long, with a vertical drop of 132 metres. These details give the ski centre its own profile among the activities described and help you assess the skiing on offer when choosing activities for your trip.

The ski centre’s lounge area includes a 28-square-metre café with 35 to 40 seats. This adds a description of the centre’s indoor facilities to the information about the lift run and vertical drop.
