Veggli between churches, trails and the river valley

Veggli combines a striking church setting with historic trails and a rail bike tour through the Numedalslågen valley. Cultural history and outdoor activities go hand in hand here: the Veggli kirke and ancient burial mounds are part of the local history, alongside hiking trails, the disused Numedalsbanen railway and an Activity Park in the centre. When choosing a holiday home in Veggli, it can help to first consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.

Church and historic traces

The Veggli kirke is a long church dating from 1859, built to replace an earlier stave church. Its surviving features include medieval bells, a baptismal font and a chest. The central subject of the altarpiece is Nicodemus, who comes to Jesus at night and speaks with him. Alongside the building’s history, there are also specific details of the church furnishings to discover.

Near the start of the Nordmannsslepa, by the Veggli kirke, are around 30 burial mounds dating from the Migration Period. The historic traces continue along the Kulturstien, which runs from the centre of Veggli along the Nørsteåe to an old stone bridge and onwards to the burial mounds at Kjemhus. There, the Kulturstien meets the Store Normannsslepa; a few hundred metres further on is a large burial ground with more than 30 burial mounds from the early Middle Ages. As parts of the Kulturstien are not well maintained, it is best to check the trail’s condition before setting out.

Hiking trails with different character

The Nordmannsslepa is 23 kilometres long, follows a one-way route from the centre of Veggli towards Kongsberg and is considered moderately difficult. It was officially opened as a historic hiking route in 2024 during Middelalderuka in Numedal. A separate pilgrimage route between the stave church in Rollag and the Veggli kirke takes place annually during Middelalderuka. When comparing the different routes, you can distinguish between the longer Nordmannsslepa, the Kulturstien with its stone bridge and burial grounds, and the pilgrimage walk between the two churches.

Rail bikes, river scenery and Activity Park

On the disused Numedalsbanen railway, you can ride a rail bike between Veggli and Rødberg through scenic, historic surroundings. The ride starts at Veggli station; the numerous points offer a little practice in handling the rail bike. Rail bikes can be hired at Veggli Vertshus, where you will receive an introduction before setting off. The route follows the valley slope along the Numedalslågen and offers views of a largely unspoilt river landscape, dams and power plants. In the heart of Veggli, the Activity Park has a volleyball court, a cycling track and play equipment. There is also a small impounded swimming spot, which is free to use on warm summer days. The Vegglidagen is held there every August, with activities, market stalls and entertainment. As the date and programme may vary, it is worth checking the details before your visit.

Rollag as an additional cultural destination

The broader destination of Rollag is home to Rollag Bygdetun. It consists of 14 buildings brought together from various farms in Rollag and features several exhibitions with more than 1,000 objects illustrating everyday life in the area. The café at Rollag Bygdetun serves waffles and ice cream during the summer season. This cultural history belongs to Rollag and adds to the broader destination without replacing Veggli’s local attractions.
