Maritime history, a distinctive shipping route and nature experiences are among the themes you can explore in Lillesand. There are also activities where children can search, play or take part in a sandcastle competition at the town beach. When planning your holiday, it helps to consider what you would most like to focus on: would you like to centre your visit on the sailing ship era, are you especially interested in waterside trails, or are you looking for a range of activities to enjoy together as a family?

Sailing ships and historical traces

This year’s exhibitions at Lillesand Museum explore the great importance of the sailing ship era to the region. Topics range from shipowners, shipbuilding and life at sea to maritime dangers, pilotage and the role of women. Working life is also part of this picture: in Lillesand, most of the population worked either in shipbuilding or at sea. If you want to learn about the maritime past, you’ll encounter not only the history of the ships, but also the occupations and aspects of life connected with seafaring.

At Tollboden, Tollmuseet presents a photo exhibition about sailing ships from Lillesand, as well as changing art exhibitions. Carl Knudsen-gaarden offers a different historical perspective: the Empire-style building dates from 1827 and contains furnishings from the 19th century. At Verven stands the only surviving building from Lillesand’s sailing ship industry. Its heyday came towards the end of the 19th century. Together with a town walk past historic white-painted houses and charming lanes, these places offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

The scale of shipbuilding in the past is also part of Lillesand’s history. From 1860 to 1900, there were up to eight shipyards in the harbour, where fifty large wooden sailing ships were built. These figures give the maritime past a concrete scale and complement the themes explored in the museum and the townscape.

Shipping route and nature experiences

Blindleia is one of Norway’s most beautiful shipping routes. It runs from Lillesand to Gamle Hellesund and Ulvøysund. The route is one of the distinctive maritime themes you can explore while discovering the region.

Springvannsstemmen, in the heart of Lillesand, is a good choice for a short circular walk. The water is also important for amphibians: tadpoles and salamanders spawn in and around it. There is also a salamander hotel where amphibians can overwinter. In the Kaldvell area, meanwhile, the trails stand out for their carefully constructed routes along the Stikselva and Grimevann. From Fløresteinen, you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Lillesand. These nature spots offer different experiences, from a walk by the water to a view over the town.

Another place to visit is Knibenro, a day-trip cabin at the Kniben viewpoint in Lillesand. It is the first day-trip cabin in Agder. This means nature, views and maritime history can all feature among your holiday interests, without the need to follow a set itinerary.

Discoveries with children

At the figurine trail in Flørenesskauen, no fewer than 30 elaborately crafted figures are hidden among the trees. It’s an invitation to keep your eyes open as you look for the individual figures. The playground in S.N. Hansens park is ideal for family outings and offers several specific attractions: an oversized blue chair, its own sandy beach and great opportunities for catching crabs.

There’s also an activity for children at Lillesand’s centrally located town beach: they can take part in a sandcastle competition. The family activities each offer something different. The figurine trail is about finding hidden characters among the greenery, the park combines a playground with crab catching, and the town beach offers sand and a competition. If you’re planning a trip with children, you can choose based on which of these experiences would be most interesting for your family.
