Lunden is considered the northernmost farm in Reddal and is sheltered near the forest and mountains. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Lunden will find a place closely connected to the forest and mountain landscape; hiking trails and traces of history add to the experience in the surrounding area and across the municipality.

Historic Traces Around Lunden

The history of Lunden includes a waterfall in the Reddalselven that several farm owners once used to operate a sawmill and mills. Routes also tell the story of past connections: an old farm track led from Lunden towards Søndle and Lundesanden below Rossefjell. The route from Søndle via Reddal and Reddalsvann was once used mainly to transport timber.

A historic, reasonably passable cart road also ran near Lunden through Klamrene below Rossefjell and into Røsdalen. Nearby, Kjørkevegen runs between Reddal and Landvik; this route was probably used for around 1,500 years. At Ligsteinen, bearers carrying coffins from Beisland to be buried at Landvik church would rest. These stopping places give the landscape a history that goes beyond individual viewpoints.

Hikes of Different Lengths

The road to the hiking trail at Einerfjell follows FV31 past Lunden sandtak. The trail is marked with red markers. The circular hike at Einerfjell is about 3.5 km long and offers views across the Reddal landscape, Reddalsvannet and, in the distance, the sea.

A longer hike leads to Bjønnoksenheia: the circular route is 7.8 km long, takes about 2.5 hours and reaches 272 m above sea level. From there, the view extends to Mofjell, Halseheia and Midtknollen; on clear days, the sea can also be seen in the distance. The two circular hikes differ in length, while an approximate duration is also given for the Bjønnoksenheia hike.

Choosing a Route and Finding Your Way

The Barnevandrerstien offers another option nearby, with its final section between Reddal and Landvik. It is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs. The trail can be ridden by bicycle, although you will need to push your bike for a few short sections. Families travelling with a pushchair should therefore choose their route carefully.

In the municipality, the Vestlandske hovedvei offers a different kind of route: it includes a red main loop of about 3.5 km and a green additional loop of about 5 km. Both are suitable for bicycles and pushchairs. The Vestlandske hovedvei opened in the municipality in 1805; the bridge over Reddalskanalen was built as an identical replacement for the previous bridge. The circular routes and historic roads thus offer different ways to plan a stay.

Nature and Culture in the Municipality

Reddalsvannet is a nature reserve with a diverse birdlife, especially in the reed beds. Haslelia preserves the remains of a settlement that was inhabited a little over 200 years ago. These include stone walls around former farmland and stone heaps from earlier buildings. These places add opportunities for observing nature and seeing traces of past settlement to the hiking routes.

Grimstad as a Wider Regional Destination

In the wider destination of Grimstad, the Raet National Park visitor centre is located at the Norwegian Museum of Horticulture in Dømmesmoen. The centre provides information about experiences in the Grimstad section of the park. This regional connection broadens your trip planning without conflating destinations in the municipality with attractions in Grimstad.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by thinking about what you would like to do during your stay: hike and enjoy the views nearby, explore the historic roads around Lunden, or discover cycling routes and traces of the past in the municipality. This helps you choose a location based on your specific interests. If you plan to follow historic routes, it is a good idea to check current trail conditions in advance.
