Evje: Walking Trails, the Otra and Mining History
Accommodation in Evje
Evje combines walking and swimming areas along the Otra River with bowling in town and trails in a nearby mining and mineral landscape. The region’s history is also on display: the nearby Evjemoen Forsvarsmuseum and the sites in the Flåt mining area offer different historical perspectives.
Walking Trails, Circular Routes and Water
Furuly friluftspark has maintained walking trails and circular routes suitable for everyone. The park also has a sandy beach and a swimming area by the Otra River. Trails and water come together in one place here—a practical option if you want to include both walks and a place to swim in your holiday plans.
The Dansarberga circular route is 6.5 kilometres long and leads to a plateau as large as a dance floor. There are several viewpoints along the route. Dansarberga was originally a place where young people gathered to dance. Beside the plateau is a rock that served as a seat for the fiddler. Sturdy trainers or hiking boots are recommended, as the trail can be slippery.
The Mykleåsen trail offers a different landscape: it passes through wooded terrain in a traditional mining and mineral area and offers views of Evje and the Otra River. While Dansarberga is described as a circular route of a specified length with several viewpoints, the Mykleåsen trail experience is shaped by the forest, the mining area and the views of Evje and the Otra.
The Evje mineralsti links five old mines on a walking trail through a landscape of cultural and historical significance. Equipment is available to borrow; wearing a helmet and safety glasses is mandatory. This requirement is important when planning your visit: protective equipment is one of the conditions for using the trail.
Mining and Local History
At the Flåt mining area, visitors can scan QR codes to access information about the history of each site. The facilities of the Flåt nickel mine are now filled with water, but their history can still be explored.
The nearby Evjemoen Forsvarsmuseum is south of Evje town centre and opened in 2006. It explores the region’s history, focusing on the development of Evjemoen and on the development and transformation of the military in wartime and peacetime. The museum is the only army museum between Bergen and Oslo. One exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of Jørgen Løvland, who was a member of parliament and prime minister.
When planning a visit to the Gruveblikk day-use cabin in Flatebygd, the condition of the trail is particularly important. The trail to the cabin is designed for electric wheelchairs, but its slope is too steep for manual wheelchairs. The trail is not cleared of snow in winter. The Evje lysløype is lit from October to April.
Bowling, Billiards and Air Hockey
Evje Bowling has five lanes, all with bumpers for children. There are also billiards and air hockey. Bowling birthday parties are available, and bumpers can be put up along the lanes for them. Shoes and balls for small children are available. Evje Bowling therefore offers a specific activity alongside the walking trails, circular routes and historical sites. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Evje, you can consider which of these experiences you want to make the focus of your trip.
