Discover Ask: Cultural Centre and Pilgrimage History
Accommodation in Ask
Ask offers concrete ways to explore culture and pilgrimage history: concerts and performances take place at Gjerdrum Cultural Centre, and a historic pilgrimage walk began here. Services at Misjonshuset are also part of the local scene. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Ask, these themes can help you decide which experiences you want to shape your stay.
Culture at Gjerdrum Cultural Centre
Gjerdrum Cultural Centre has two halls for concerts and performances. Høyenhall is an amphitheatre with 190 seats; Solheimstua is a club stage with room for about 80 people. The two venues differ both in layout and capacity. The cultural centre is open when activities and performances are taking place. Check the relevant date when planning a specific visit.
Services are held at Misjonshuset in Ask. Together with the cultural centre, this venue offers another glimpse of local community life. Fylkesvei 120 runs through Ask between Moss, Lillestrøm and Hurdal; Gjerdrum Cultural Centre is centrally located in the village, about 100 metres from Ask terminal bus station.
A historic pilgrimage walk starting in Ask
A pilgrimage walk began on 9 August in Ask and ended on Friday, 13 August, in Spitalen in Stange. The route described went from the church office in Ask to Nystulia, via the golf course and Fladbybekken, and up to Høyenhall. It then went down Asmyrgata to Hval and back up to Ask. The stages were organised as daily distances of 10 to 20 kilometres.
The dates and sequence make the walk tangible as a multi-day historic route: Ask appears both as the starting point and as a place at the end of the route described. This offers a different focus for a trip than attending a performance at the cultural centre. Those interested in pilgrimage history will find a specific route in the named stops, while the daily stages give a sense of the scale of the walk at the time.
Practical information for Ask
There is public parking at Gjerdrum Cultural Centre. Accessible parking spaces are located by Frivilligsentralen; vehicles displaying a disabled parking permit may also park in a suitable spot by the main entrance. This information complements the cultural centre’s location near the bus station and helps you plan your visit. Fylkesvei 120 provides another geographic reference, running through Ask and linking the route between Moss, Lillestrøm and Hurdal.
Gjerdrum as a wider destination
The wider destination of Gjerdrum includes nature and culture beyond the description of Ask. At 410.6 metres above sea level, Prekestolen is Gjerdrum’s highest point; the ascent is about three kilometres long and runs partly along a gravel road and partly along a path. Torshov Nature Reserve protects an old spruce forest rich in deadwood on marine clay. Lysdammen is a bathing spot with a landscaped green area along parts of the water and accessible facilities.
The routes also differ in their described character: the 33.8-kilometre “Langt inn i Gjerdrum” route starts at the Tæruddalen recreation area in Skedsmo, continues to Gjerdrum and passes four places serving refreshments. The circular route from Harasletta lies entirely within Gjerdrum municipality, passing through forest and over marshland and by two places serving refreshments. “Postfinner'n”, an orienteering activity, is suitable for children and adults of all ages; the posts are out in the terrain from May to October, although the exact dates may vary by season.
The wider destination of Gjerdrum also offers its own cultural programme: Kulturukene is an annual series of events held in autumn, lasting several weeks and featuring concerts, art exhibitions, lectures, dance classes and theatre. Alongside the cultural centre’s halls, the region therefore offers cultural events spanning several weeks and a range of formats.
