The Merwede Canal forms the central thread of the Dotterbloem Route and is a popular shipping route for both commercial and recreational navigation. The main section of the route is 7 km long. Free parking for the Dotterbloem Route is available at Raadhuisplein in Meerkerk. This distance provides clear guidance when planning excursions around accommodation in Meerkerk.
The additional loop of the Dotterbloem Route through the Zouweboezem is closed from 15 March through 15 July inclusive. This loop requires crossing the Oude Zederik in a small rowing boat. The grass paths through Quakernaak and the Zouweboezem are not suitable for wheelchairs. These specific conditions are important considerations when choosing suitable excursion plans.
De Zouweboezem Nature Area
The Zouweboezem was excavated in the 14th century to collect excess polder water. Today, it has a boardwalk through the reedlands and several viewpoints. The extensive marshy reedlands are home to the largest breeding colony of purple herons in the Netherlands. Together with the Oude Zederik flowing through the nature area, this creates an impressive focal point for landscape and nature enthusiasts.
Water Tower and Local History
The Meerkerk water tower is a well-known landmark in the town. It was built in 1935–1936 on behalf of Drinkwaterleining De Alblasserwaard en De Vijfheerenlanden. At 59.72 metres high, the tower features a typical interwar architectural style related to Functionalism and Nieuwe Bouwen.
The water tower has cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning value. As a prominent landmark, it is particularly important to Meerkerk’s townscape. The Hervormde Kerk also takes visitors back to an earlier era: it is based on an originally late-medieval building. The war memorial is an upright, open granite oval bearing the names of twenty-one war victims. It commemorates residents of Meerkerk who died during the Second World War and in the former Dutch East Indies, and was unveiled on 4 May 2011.
Farm Activities and Local Flavours
Melkveehouderij V.O.F. Kloek-Blom in Meerkerk offers educational activities on the farm. This provides an engaging introduction to an agricultural aspect of the town and can be particularly appealing to families with different interests. For a delicious break, IJsboerderij Middelbroeck produces traditionally made ice cream and welcomes visitors to stop for a scoop. The ice cream is made with milk from cows that graze outdoors as much as possible.
Forel Visvijvers Zederik offers coffee, ice cream and a sandwich with smoked trout. In this way, the farm, ice-cream parlour and trout fishery complement the water and nature themes with specific culinary stops. A holiday apartment or other accommodation in Meerkerk can therefore be chosen according to your own priorities: walking routes and reedlands, culture in the townscape, or family-friendly educational and culinary experiences.
