Spijkenisse is home to the medieval Oude Kerk, a sight that is still regarded as such today. Spijkenisse originated as a farming and fishing community on a branch of the Oude Maas. The harbour of Spijkenisse is now located on this branch. The oldest historic building in the city is the Dorpskerk Spijkenisse. The church was completed in 1521.

Culture and History

The Oudheidkamer Spijkenisse is located in the De Boekenberg library. Its permanent exhibition includes a model of the old village made by Hans Barends. Photographs and old equipment are also on display there. The photographs shown there can be researched digitally. The Spijkenisserbrug monument commemorates the old bridge. During the Second World War, this bridge was part of the occupying power's defensive line. At Noordeinde, the Nooitgedacht windmill is a sight in Spijkenisse.

Spijkenisse therefore brings together various historical points of reference in close proximity within the city's history: the medieval Oude Kerk, the Dorpskerk completed in 1521, the memory of the wartime bridge and the Nooitgedacht windmill at Noordeinde. The Oudheidkamer complements these architectural and local references with the model of the old village, photographs and old equipment.

Theater de Stoep offers a varied programme every year. The programme includes cabaret, music, dance, theatre for young people and drama. The various forms of performance mentioned thus range from musical and dance events to cabaret and drama.

The route options thus include the seven Eurobruggen, the Stad & Park route along the Oude Maas, and the walking and cycling routes available at TOP Spijkenisse. The length and duration are expressly specified for the longer route. At TOP, signposted paths and GPX files provide additional orientation, while the paved path in Allemansgriend continues to Maaswijkweg.

Water and Nature

The Fluisterboot IJsvogel travels from the historic De Leeuw van Putten pumping station towards the polder landscape outside the city. Vogelenzangpark is located next to Mallebos. The Vierambachtenboezem separates Vogelenzangpark from Mallebos. In Vogelenzangpark, nature offers space for free exploration.

In the Beerenplaatgrienden, a path leads through pollard woodland areas with reeds and rushes. The path runs along the water. It also passes beneath deciduous trees.

The waterscapes and landscape areas thus show different sides of the locality: the Fluisterboot IJsvogel departs from the historic pumping station and travels to the polder landscape outside the city. In Vogelenzangpark, Mallebos and Vierambachtenboezem have a clearly described spatial relationship. In the Beerenplaatgrienden, the path connects with water, pollard woodland areas, reeds, rushes and deciduous trees.
