Holiday apartment in Hazerswoude-Rijndijk: culture and cycling along the Oude Rijn
Accommodation in Hazerswoude-Rijndijk
Hazerswoude-Rijndijk combines cultural history, water management and a Roman route with a cycling route along the Oude Rijn. Scheepjeskerk, the Nieuw Werklust roof-tile factory, two windmills, Westvaartpark and the Koudekerkse Bridge bring different historical themes together in the same local setting. For culture enthusiasts, the area offers everything from neo-Gothic architecture and the clay industry to the route of the Hollandse-Limes cycling route.
Scheepjeskerk: neo-Gothic church built in 1855, organ and listed status
Scheepjeskerk was built in 1855 in the neo-Gothic style by architect W.G. van Vogelpoel and is also known as Bernarduskerk. Inside is a Maarschalkerweerd organ dating from 1901. The Maarschalkerweerd organ therefore dates from a later construction phase than the neo-Gothic church building itself. In November 2013, Scheepjeskerk was designated a municipal monument.
Nieuw Werklust on the Oude Rijn: brick production since the 17th century
The Nieuw Werklust roof-tile factory is located on the Oude Rijn. It has cultural and architectural-historical value as a reminder of the once-thriving clay industry along the Rhine. The Nieuw Werklust clay-products factory has produced roof tiles and bricks since the 17th century. Around 37 buildings still stand on the site; they were designated Rijksmonuments in 2002. The approximate number refers to the site as a whole and not to a single building. The complex therefore combines the history of manufacturing with a surviving architectural ensemble on the Oude Rijn. For culture enthusiasts, craftsmanship, building-material production and preserved historic structures come together here.
Windmills: polder drainage and water renewal
The Groenendijkse Molen was built in 1627 to drain the Nieuw Groenendijk polder. Today, the Rijnenburgermolen serves to renew the water system in the adjacent residential neighbourhood. The two windmills represent different periods in water-management history: historic polder drainage and the present-day renewal of the water system in the adjacent residential neighbourhood.
Roman route in Westvaartpark between Leiden and Alphen aan den Rijn
Westvaartpark lies exactly halfway along the Roman route from Matilo fort in Leiden to Albaniana fort in the city centre of Alphen aan den Rijn. The park is therefore located between the two forts and not at either endpoint of this Roman route.
Cycling along the Oude Rijn: Hollandse-Limes cycling route through Hazerswoude
The Hollandse-Limes cycling route follows the Oude Rijn and passes through Hazerswoude. Nieuw Werklust is located on the same river, giving the cycling route and the clay industry a shared geographical setting. For cyclists, the route therefore combines passing through the village with the riverside location.
Koudekerkse Bridge: built in 1929 and a Rijksmonument since 2011
The present Koudekerkse Bridge was built in 1929 and has been a Rijksmonument since 2011. The bridge adds another listed structure to the historic local setting. Dating from 1929, the bridge is later than the windmill from 1627 and the church from 1855. The listed status from 2011 therefore postdates the construction year of 1929.
