Holiday apartment in Oud-Beijerland between history and nature
Oud-Beijerland combines a distinctive historic centre with waterscapes, historic paths and nature-oriented attractions. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore focus on different aspects: the centre leads to the harbour, churches, markets and listed buildings, while Klein Profijt and De Oude Tol offer themes such as landscape, activity and experiencing nature.
Historic centre on the Vliet
The Oude Raadhuis is a historic 17th-century building on the Vliet in the heart of Oud-Beijerland. It has been a Rijksmonument since 1966. The Rooms-Katholieke Kerk has been a municipal monument since 2004. The Dorpskerk is considered the oldest and best-known church in Oud-Beijerland.
The harbour is also located in the middle of the town centre. Characteristic houses and attractive façades surround the harbour basin. The prosperity Oud-Beijerland gained through trade, agriculture and fishing can still be seen in the stately mansions along the Vliet and on the Havendam.
The walking route of the Historische Vereniging Oud-Beijerland begins on the bridge in front of the Oude Raadhuis at Waterstal 1. A 2.8-kilometre walk through the historic centre takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes and gives you an impression of several monumental buildings. The “Ontdek Oud-Beijerland I” route also passes Bierkade and the Jewish memorial “Am j’Israel Chai”.
The Carel Wüst Museum offers a special addition to the town’s history: there you can see 38 classic and youngtimer cars.
Markets and events in the centre
The centre of Oud-Beijerland hosts numerous events. These include markets such as Spuidag, Jaarmarkt and the Christmas market “op de Winterse Sferen”. There are several secure bicycle parking facilities for getting around the town. Bus stops are within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the weekly market.
Klein Profijt and the Hoeksche Waard landscape
The Klein Profijt visitor centre is located in the countryside of the area outside the dikes. From here, you can begin exploring the National Landscape of Hoeksche Waard. Permanent and temporary exhibitions focus on the flora and fauna of the Hoeksche Waard. A terrace offers views of the Oude Maas. The centre also includes a youth room and a Kabouterpad in its garden and willow marsh woodland.
The “Klein Profijt De Staart” route begins at the car park of the Klein Profijt nature visitor centre and leads, among other places, through the De Staart nature reserve and willow marsh woodlands. Along the Oude Maas near Rotterdam, there is rare freshwater tidal nature: some areas fill up at high tide and are largely drained at low tide.
De Oude Tol for paths and water
TOP De Oude Tol is a starting point where you can leave your car and follow signposted or described cycling and walking routes through the rural surroundings. The De Oude Tol recreational area in Oud-Beijerland has a natural playground and a swimming beach. This allows you to vary your stay between sightseeing in the town, walking and spending time by the water.
Crossing the Spui with the Rhoonsveer
The Rhoonsveer is a bicycle and passenger ferry that connects Oud-Beijerland at two locations with Rhoon and Spijkenisse across the Spui. The ferry operates year-round, except during the Christmas holidays.
The Inspiratiepunt Hoeksche Waard is also located in the Oude Raadhuis. It provides information about the most beautiful places as well as walking and cycling routes and activities in the Hoeksche Waard.
