Village landscape and remembrance

The Dutch Reformed Church at Kerkring 1 in Oude-Tonge is a large late-Gothic village church. Oude-Tonge is one of the villages belonging to the Voorstraat settlement type characteristic of Goeree-Overflakkee. In this type of settlement, a street usually runs at right angles to the dike and often ends at a square with a church. This means the village landscape can be viewed both through an individual religious building and through the structure of a village.

The war memorial in Oude-Tonge commemorates the American pilot Robert E. Stover, who died near Oude-Tonge on 30 July 1943. It consists of a natural stone pedestal with a twisted propeller blade mounted on it. The natural stone pedestal with the twisted propeller blade gives the war memorial a clearly recognizable form. The “Watersnoodramp Oude-Tonge” route passes several memorial monuments. During the 1953 North Sea flood disaster, Oude-Tonge had the highest number of victims; more than 300 residents were caught by surprise by the water at night.

Routes, canal and nature

Oude-Tonge is associated with three different ways of exploring the area. The “Havenkanaal Oude-Tonge - Ooltgensplaat” cycling route starts at bicycle junction 92 in Oude-Tonge. The “Havenkanaal Oude-Tonge” walking route follows the harbor and the Havenkanaal of Oude-Tonge. The “Podwalk Oude-Tonge” is a GPS-guided audio tour that can be downloaded via an app. The three formats therefore differ in terms of mode of transport and presentation. When choosing a format in Oude-Tonge, the key question is whether you want to start at junction 92, walk along the harbor or download the GPS-guided Podwalk as an audio tour.

The Havenkanaal of Oude-Tonge is an idyllic waterway connecting the village with the Krammer. Wild orchids grow along the banks. The area around the Havenkanaal provides a habitat for waterfowl and meadow birds. The harbor of Oude-Tonge lies on the boundary between fresh and salt water. The waterway, vegetation along the banks, birdlife and the fresh-saltwater boundary give the area a nature-oriented character distinct from its historical features.
