History

The Kooijwijkse Molen was formerly a beacon or signal windmill. A lifting frame for a lamp can still be seen on its upper structure. Before 1866, the Kooijwijkse Molen replaced an older windmill. This older windmill had been demolished because of its poor condition.

The former signal function and the surviving feature on the upper structure therefore belong to the history of the same mill. At the same time, its present-day structure recalls the replacement building from before 1866 and the older windmill that has not survived.

De Hoop mills around 500 kilograms of wheat per week. The flour is intended for hobby bakers.

The Peilmolen was built in 1819. It was constructed on the site of a post mill that had been destroyed by fire. Until the 1950s, the Peilmolen drained the Zuidzijde drainage district. A motor pumping station was involved in this drainage. The drainage district covered 630 hectares.

The construction history of the Peilmolen therefore includes both the fire that destroyed the former post mill and the later construction of 1819. Its role in water management remained connected to the Zuidzijde drainage district and the motor pumping station until the 1950s.

The Kooijwijkse Molen drained the Noordzijde polder together with the Noordelijke Kooijwijkse Molen.

The surviving mill histories thus encompass different functions: signaling, milling wheat, and draining polders and drainage districts. The years mentioned mark different stages in this development.
