Holiday apartment in Nieuw-Lekkerland amid dikes and polder history

Nieuw-Lekkerland brings together mills, dikes, water management and historic buildings to create a varied destination for curious days away. The Hoge Molen still operates regularly on a voluntary basis. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Nieuw-Lekkerland can therefore get to know the area through specific experiences and a distinctive landscape, rather than relying on general impressions of the town.

Mills and public access

The Korenmolen De Regt windmill, which is still standing today, is generally dated to around 1850. During the summer season, from April to September, it is open to the public every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with free admission. Guided tours led by volunteers are also available. These clearly defined hours provide a fixed cultural anchor for your day plan, provided you schedule your stay to include a suitable Saturday.

Dike houses, technology and historic landscapes

Several buildings on and near the Lekdijk tell the story of different chapters in the area’s history. The Oude Algemene Begraafplaats cemetery on the Lekdijk is a valuable historic landscape element in Nieuw-Lekkerland. The farmhouse at Lekdijk 63 is a 17th-century hall-house farm and an example of a farm located inside the dike at its foot. The water tower at Lekdijk 82 is a hexagonal concrete tower with a round elevated water tank; it was built in 1915 to a design by J. Smit and the engineer A. Visser. Also located on the Lekdijk is the care home, built in 1885 as a dike house in the eclectic style.

Water management also shapes Nieuw-Lekkerland. The former Heijnis steam pumping station at Boezemkade 1 is a preserved remnant of the high-level boezem of the Nieuw-Lekkerland polder. The Nieuw-Lekkerland polder had a small-scale water management system similar to those in Overwaard and Nederwaard. Together with the dikes and historic mills, this creates a townscape in which landscape and technology are closely interlinked.

Walking, memorial sites and regional impressions

A 20.8 km Kinderdijk walking route runs through the surrounding area, crossing dikes, passing through the polder and leading past the mills. This makes it possible to experience the landscape as part of a longer, active day programme. The Mission Belle B-17G Memorial is also located near Nieuw-Lekkerland, on the Lekdijk between Streefkerk and Nieuw-Lekkerland. The two attractions offer different focal points: the walking route leads through the landscape, while the memorial is tied to a specific location on the Lekdijk.

Nieuw-Lekkerland is also home to the heated Zwembad Schoonenburg outdoor swimming pool. Anyone wishing to include local food and farming traditions can visit the farm shop at Boerderij Eben-Haëzer, which has been operating in Nieuw-Lekkerland since 21 May 2021. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore give greater consideration to your travel group’s interests: mills and architectural history suit culture-focused days, the walking route adds activity to your stay, and the swimming pool and farm shop broaden the range of possible outings.

For connections between Lekkerkerk and Nieuw-Lekkerland, you should include the timetable for the passenger and bicycle ferry in your planning: it does not operate on Sundays. This day of the week should therefore be taken into account separately when organising a crossing.

If you would like to expand your choice of locations, you can also view Oud-Alblas and Ottoland.
