Fort Buitensluis as a historic experience
The beginnings of Fort Buitensluis date back to 1793 or 1794, when it was built as an earthwork fort with cannons to prevent enemy troops from crossing the Hollandsch Diep. Walking trails on the grounds lead past the various buildings. From there, you can enjoy views of Willemstad and the Haringvliet Bridge across the Hollandsch Diep.
The Zuiderwaterlinie hiking route is 6.9 km long and offers an exploration of nature, history and culture around Fort Buitensluis. At several stations along the Watersnoodwandeling, audio recordings narrated by guide Dick Holster are available. This gives you a choice between observing the surroundings independently along the trails and listening to accompanying audio stations.
Architectural history and sacred architecture
The historic potato storage facility De Stêêne Hut was built in 1947 to store the potato harvest of the Ambachtsheerlijkheid Cromstrijen in dark, cool, dry and frost-free conditions. With its prefabricated building elements and extensive use of concrete, it is typical of post-war reconstruction architecture. Numansdorp is also home to the Nederlands-hervormde Church, a Rijksmonument and a hall church dating from 1653, with a three-sided chancel and a wooden barrel vault with tie beams.
Cycling and hiking routes
Zuidfront Vesting Holland is a 55 km cycling route with 13 information points about the history of the Hoeksche Waard. The circular route with the Deltapontjes ferries passes through Numansdorp, Willemstad, Moerdijk and Strijensas and can be used for cycling or a long-distance hike. The signposted Molenpolderroute is 6.2 km long. The various distances help you adapt your plans to the available time, fitness level and interests of your fellow travellers.
Natural areas along the Hollandsch Diep
Nature enthusiasts focus on the Oosterse Bekade Gorzen along the Hollandsch Diep. The large nature reserve encompasses overgrown reedlands, open stretches of water, channels and creeks, nature areas outside the dikes, and willow forests. The 60-hectare area around the Rinkelpit was developed as the Oosterse Bekade Gorzen nature and recreation area in 2009 and 2010. The different landscape elements shape the character of the area and make it interesting for nature observation.
For finding your way around the town, the central shopping street is important: it leads towards the municipal harbour. A few kilometres farther along the Hollands Diep are a marina and a golf course. In addition, Alexandershof farm shop offers fresh vegetables and potatoes from its own land, as well as fruit, fresh eggs and organic juice. The range therefore extends from a stroll through town to regional products.
The right holiday apartment for your daily plans
When choosing a holiday apartment in Numansdorp, you can consider which focus best suits your days: a shorter hike, a longer cycling excursion with a historical focus, nature along the Hollandsch Diep, or architectural and sacred history. For trips with fellow travellers of varying endurance levels, the clearly stated route lengths make planning together easier; anyone wishing to combine culture and landscape will find several independent starting points for doing so.
