Accommodation in Brielle
The fortifications of Brielle have undergone little change since 1713 and are among the most significant preserved fortifications in the Netherlands. Interactive presentations can be viewed in some of the bunkers within these fortifications, including those on Bastion V and Bastion IX. Guided city walks in Brielle lead through old streets lined with historic houses, introduce visitors to façade stones and run along the Provoost; the fortifications can also be visited. The Boten en Bakens walking route also passes through Brielle.

History
Construction of the Sint-Catharijnekerk, also known as the Brielse Dom, began in the 13th century; a fire and lack of funds meant that the church remained unfinished. Its tower is 57 metres high and can be climbed by visitors. For tourist visits, the Sint-Catharijnekerk is open from 1 May to 31 October, Monday to Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Museum
The Historisch Museum Den Briel is located in a former city prison and a former weigh house. Its digital tour leads to 32 locations and sights in the city and on the fortification walls. The tour provides historical information in Dutch and English, accessible via QR codes at the individual objects.
Culture
The Asyl voor Oude en Gebrekkige Zeelieden complex on Asylplein was built between 1872 and 1874. It was designed in the Neo-Renaissance style as a complex originally consisting of fourteen courtyard apartments. A bronze statue of Victoria stands in the garden on Asylplein, commemorating Brielle’s freedom jubilee of 1872.
The Tollhuis on Maarland dates from the mid-18th century and belonged to Brielle’s former Waterpoort, which was built in 1609 and demolished in 1894. Brielle’s historic Maarlandhaven lies on Maarland among centuries-old warehouses.
Pilgrimage and festivals
The Nationale Bedevaart Brielle takes place every year on a Saturday shortly before or after 9 July, the feast day of the Holy Martyrs of Gorcum. The Bedevaartskerk in Brielle was built between 1929 and 1931 as part of the H.H. Martelaren van Gorcum pilgrimage complex. The celebration on 1 April is held annually in Brielle and welcomes visitors.
Water and craftsmanship
Lake Brielle was formerly called the Brielse Maas and was an important shipping route. Watersportcentrum Brielle rents traditional rowing boats, boats with 4-horsepower outboard motors or electric motors, kayaks, Canadian canoes, SUP boards and a sailboat. At the ’t Vliegend Hert windmill, grain is milled using traditional craftsmanship and various types of flour are sold.
