Nature between Vressels Bos and the Dommel
To the east of the village of Nijnsel and the Dommel River lies Vressels Bos, covering around 250 hectares. At its centre are the Hazenputten, a natural heathland pool. The area is home to Scottish Highland cattle and Exmoor ponies; its entrance and the starting points for the walking trails are on Vogelsven road.
Nearby lies Dommelbeemden, on the eastern banks of the Dommel between Nijnsel and Sint-Oedenrode. The nature reserve covers 100 hectares of hay meadows, pollard willows, an old, overgrown stream meander with numerous water lilies and original arable fields. Nearby, a lookout tower in the Dommel valley offers views of the meandering river.
Circular walks themed around the village, nature and history
The “Ommetje Thieu Sijbers” circular walk begins at Zalencentrum De Beckart, Oude Lieshoutseweg 7 in Nijnsel, and covers 4.5 kilometres through the village and surrounding countryside. Information panels featuring poems by Thieu Sijbers accompany the route. Nearby, a walking route through the Moerkuilen and Dommelbeemden also starts at a car park near Lieshoutsedijk 34.
The “Op (oorlogs)pad – Rondje Sint-Oedenrode” route passes historic sites such as Damianenklooster, Kasteel Henkenshage and the Dommelbrug, and conveys the history of the Second World War and the liberation. Nearby, Natuurpoort De Vresselse Hut is a rest and lunch stop for walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers. This allows you to compare different routes and themes when planning your day.
Church, boundary stone and museums
The Grenssteen has marked the boundary point between the lordships of Jekschot and Lieshout and the freedom of Rode since 1311. It contributes to the collective memory of Nijnsel and deserves attention as local cultural heritage. The Antonius van Padua Church in Nijnsel was designed by Eindhoven architect L.P.J. Kooken. An outdoor mass in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua is held at the church every year.
The Heilig Hartbeeld Nijnsel was donated by the parishioners in 1924 on the occasion of the silver priestly jubilee of Pastor J.A.M. Panken and stands to the left of the entrance to the Antonius van Padua Church. Museum Hoeve Strobol displays restored tractors, automobiles, craft tools and household items.
Museum Hoeve Strobol organises themed days showing how earlier generations harvested crops, baked bread and roasted coffee, and invites adults and children to look back at a former way of life. Since 2023, the National Pig Museum has been located at Bij Kato. During the Bij Kato Escape Tour, participants work together to explore pig farming and life on the farm through various puzzles and tasks.
For further exploration of the region, you can also include Sint-Oedenrode.
