Holiday apartment in Nuland between heathland and hiking trails
Nulandse Heide is a diverse natural area where woodland, heathland, ditches and drifting sand alternate. The Karregat/Nulandse Heide area is located directly northwest of Nuland; it can be reached via Kruisstraat. It is freely accessible on roads and paths, and dogs are allowed there on a leash. The Nulandse Heide hike, part 1, can be combined with the Nulandse Heide hike, part 2.
Liberation route and architectural history
The route app from Erfgoed ’s-Hertogenbosch includes a liberation route through Nuland. It takes hikers and cyclists to historic sites that played an important role in the liberation of Nuland, Rosmalen and ’s-Hertogenbosch in October 1944; at these locations, the app shows videos with images from the Second World War.
The present-day Church of the Beheading of Saint John in Nuland was built in 1950 after the previous church was destroyed by shelling in 1944; the design was created by architect J. Magis. It is a three-aisled basilica with a solid western tower and a semicircular apse.
Two ANWB signs in Nuland dating from 1940 to 1950 are protected as municipal monuments. The Schutskooi dates from 1936 and was made by the local blacksmith Johannes van de Meulenreek. The three wrought-iron boats in Nuland date from 1950 and were made by the village blacksmith Toon van Amelsvoort.
The local culture of remembrance includes the surviving ground outlines of the former Polderkerk in Nuland, which were made visible again after a series of excavations since 2006. The monument to the victims of the Second World War in Nuland was erected in 1990 on the initiative of the municipality of Nuland, in a corner of the green area on Heiweg, to mark the 45th anniversary of the liberation. The location was chosen because a temporary cemetery for fallen military personnel was situated there during the war, at the liberation of Nuland on 22 October 1944. Every year on 4 May, it is the central location for the commemoration ceremony for those who fell in the Second World War.
Experiences for children at ’t Heike
At ’t Heike, wallabies are among the animals in the petting zoo. The petting zoo is designed to be wheelchair-friendly. The swimming pool has two basins: one with a water depth of 30 centimetres and one with a depth of 50 centimetres. The educational area offers the Heimannekespad learning trail at any time for children in grades 1 to 8. By arrangement, the staff at ’t Heike offer schools the approximately two-hour Meneer Pauw programme for children in grades 3 and 4.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Nuland, you can combine different holiday themes: heathland and hikes, historic routes and sites, architectural details and activities for children. The landscape and the specific memorial sites provide various starting points for planning, while ’t Heike adds its own accent with animals, shallow pools and educational programmes.
