Holiday apartment in Geffen: Mills, Nature and Village History
Accommodation in Geffen
Geffen invites you on a journey where village history, historic mills, nature trails and special excursion destinations come together. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Geffen, you can plan your days according to your preferred mix of culture, walks, cycling tours and relaxation.
Geffen’s Mills and Village History
A striking historical landmark is the De Vlijt mill. It was built in Boxtel in 1685 and moved to Geffen around 1875. The mill is scheduled to be open on Sundays from 10:00 to 12:00. The H. Maria Magdalenakerk, Geffen’s oldest building, is also part of the village’s history. Its tower was built around 1450, making the church an important historical landmark in the village.
The Zeldenrust mill is a fully operational post mill used for grinding grain. It is probably considered the oldest post mill in the Netherlands. Visits and guided tours are scheduled for Saturday mornings from 09:30 to 12:00. You can find further traces of the past at the D’n Elshof farmhouse, dating from 1812, and at the Jewish Cemetery of Geffen, which dates from before 1693 and preserves 86 gravestones. The former De Kroon steam beer brewery, which brewed beer for centuries, was also located next to the Maria Magdalenakerk.
Paths Through Landscape and Water
The historical route passes a village pond that was created in 1876 by a dyke breach. For an active exploration, the “Dwars op de Overlaat” cycling route is a good option. It is 23 kilometres long and passes traces of the era of “water misery” through a varied landscape of enclosed village centres and open lowland areas.
Shorter routes are also part of what Geffen has to offer. The “Langs Boom en Veld” walking route is approximately 12 kilometres long, passes notable trees and runs mostly along unpaved paths. In the Geffen Arboretum, walking paths lead between the trees, as does the “Huisje Boompje Beestje” nature trail. Since its foundation, around 100 different trees have been planted there. The arboretum is best reached on foot or by bicycle via the Kerkesteeg.
Experiences for Different Holiday Days
The nearby Geffense Plas was once a site for sand extraction and is now used as a bathing lake for recreation. It can be reached via the Gielekespad, which has a separate cycle path. For nature observation, the Bijenteeltmuseum Ecopoll offers insights into the honeybee and its habitat. The museum welcomes groups and school classes every year; visitors can see bees and, if they wish, touch them.
In the Geffense Bosjes, the nearby Heksje Route includes a 1-kilometre green loop and a red loop of approximately 2 kilometres. The “Effe noar Geffe” festival traditionally takes place on the first Sunday in September. More than 1,000 animals can be seen along the event route. The possible focal points therefore range from peaceful nature trails and historical discoveries to a long-standing traditional event. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether culture, activity, water or varied experiences should be at the centre of your trip.
