Monastery Gardens and Historical Traces
The Kloostertuin of Kasteelklooster Bronckhorst lies behind a wall. Inside, you will find Stations of the Cross, a greenhouse, a Lourdes grotto and a small chapel. These different elements give the garden a distinctive character and make it an informative place for anyone interested in monastic culture. Mariëndaal is also part of this historical context: it was originally a monastic estate.
The Emmausklooster plays an important role. It dates from 1645 and is considered the oldest Capuchin monastery in the Netherlands. The monastery is located on the Zuiderwaterlinie near Velp/Grave and is a center for silence and awareness. The Kloosterrondwandeling Velp begins at the former Emmausklooster in Velp. Together with the historic monastery, this path makes the spiritual and cultural-historical side of the village particularly clear, without requiring you to limit your trip to a single theme.
Velp on Foot and Through a Historical Lens
For a walk with a clearly defined starting point, the Zwietenpad is a good option. It begins and ends at the Buiten-Gewoon children's farm in Velp. Its circular route makes it easier to plan your own excursion, while the Kloosterrondwandeling Velp has a different focus and starts at the former Emmausklooster.
The Sint Vincentiuskerk also tells the story of the village's past. It is the oldest building; one of its walls dates from the Middle Ages. At the same time, the Sint Vincentiuskerk no longer has a religious function. The Redemptoristinnenklooster also has a long history: it was built on the foundations of a castle, and sisters moved into the Redemptoristinnenklooster in the mid-19th century.
