Oeffelt between the Maas landscape and local history

Oeffelt combines the Maas floodplain with nature trails and buildings that reveal different chapters of the village’s history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Oeffelt, you can plan your days around the Oeffelter Meent, routes through several types of landscape and local history. Highlights range from observing nature in the Meent to viewing the windmill, church and former ferry crossing.

Nature in the Oeffelter Meent

The Oeffelter Meent lies on a coarse-sandy riverbank ridge formed by a former river course in the Maas floodplain. As a Natura 2000 site, it includes grassland as well as river dunes made of sand and gravel. A hiking route through the Meent passes centuries-old parcels separated by characteristic Maasheggen hedgerows. Birds find food, nesting opportunities and shelter in the Oeffelter Meent. This combination of river landscape, grassland, sand, gravel and hedgerows shapes the character of the landscape.

Hiking trails of different lengths

The Oeffeltse Raam hiking route follows the Oeffeltse Raam, through De kleine Vilt, the centre of Oeffelt and the Oeffelter Meent Natura 2000 site. It starts and ends at Het Veerhuis in Oeffelt. In addition, the hiking route through the Oeffelter Meent can be combined with the Sint Agatha hiking route to create a total distance of 8 to 9 kilometres. Together, the two routes open up different parts of Oeffelt and its surrounding landscape.

De Fabelroute through two nature areas

Another route is the 15-kilometre De Fabelroute. It passes through the UNESCO site De Maasheggen and the De Vilt nature area. Its starting point is junction 2 at Het Veerhuis in Oeffelt.

Windmill, church and visible history

The stone windmill De Vooruitgang was built in Oeffelt in 1913. The Zoete Naam Jezus Church was built in 1955 and 1956 and consecrated in 1957. It replaced the church destroyed in 1944, which had been designed by Pierre Cuypers in 1854. Abstract stained-glass windows by Marius de Leeuw date from the period when it was built. The windmill and church thus add two distinct historical accents to the village landscape.

The site of the former ferry crossing in Oeffelt is still visible in the landscape. From the former ferry landing, visitors have a view of the Maas and Gennep. At this spot, the landscape view and local history come together.
