Holiday apartment in Ten Post – village history, mills and waterways
Accommodation in Ten Post
Ten Post between village history and a watery landscape
Ten Post is a compact village whose history can be traced back to 1380. It developed along the Damsterdiep, which was dug around 1425. This connection already reflects the local character: here, history is closely linked to water and routes.
Traces from several centuries
The Hervormde Kerk in Ten Post has a pulpit basin dating from the 17th century. In 1870, Ten Post acquired two churches for the Reformed and Gereformeerde congregations. The round stone gallery windmill at Eestumerweg 39 was built before 1828 as a rye and hulling mill. The shop-house at Rijksweg 213 was built around 1910 with Art Nouveau elements and consisted of a shop, a dwelling and an attached barn. It is regarded as an example of a shop-house from the first quarter of the 20th century in the province of Groningen and recalls the Rijksweg as a former shopping street. The former public school building at Eestumerweg 31 dates from 1907.
Walking through Ten Post and the surrounding area
The circular walk in Ten Post starts at the old Olle Widde mill. With an additional loop along Oosterdijkshorn, it can be extended to 5.5 kilometres. In Kröddeburen, the circular walk follows the old riverbed of the Fivel. The “De Graslanden en Oosterdijkshorn” circular walk is marked with a walking symbol; the markings indicate the correct direction of travel, counterclockwise. Abri 1 is located on the Damsterdiep at the point where the waterside path ends at the Rijksweg. After the bus route was relocated, the former bus shelter was repurposed as a viewpoint and meeting place, offering unobstructed views across Ten Post and its surroundings.
Hoeksmeer, grassland and boat route
At Hoeksmeer, water and grassland meet. Hoeksmeer is best reached via Ten Post and Wittewierum or via Garrelsweer. In winter, groups of geese are always found in the surrounding grasslands of Hoeksmeer. Route 4 is a 39.1-kilometre boat route through the Schildmeer, passing, among other places, Appingedam, Ten Post and Ten Boer.
Cycling tour and a break at the mill
Those who prefer travelling through the countryside can start and finish the “Op Hoogte Gedacht” cycling tour at the two cemeteries in Ten Post. “Bij de Molen” is located directly next to the restored “Olle Widde” mill on Eestumerweg. During the summer months, the establishment offers a large terrace beneath the mill, where visitors can eat and drink.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Ten Post, you can therefore choose between cultural and historical discoveries, a marked circular walk, a cycling tour, wildlife observation at Hoeksmeer and a boat route.
