Mill and Museums in Middelstum
The De Hoop windmill was built in 1855 as a former grain and pearl-barley mill. It is open on Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. when the flag is flying and/or the mill is operating; group tours are available on request.
The collection of the Oorlogsmuseum Middelstum focuses mainly on the province of Groningen and related areas such as East Frisia, Friesland, and Drenthe. It comprises more than 20,000 objects. Bakkerijmuseum Mendels is housed in a building that has been used as a bakery since 1792 and has been designated as a Rijksmonument.
Mendels combines a bakery museum with a tearoom offering homemade pastries and lunch. This allows you to combine a visit with a purposeful break when planning your trip. The contrast between bakery history and dining brings different interests together in one day without requiring you to commit to a single theme.
Village Character, Borg Ewsum and the Hiking Route
The houses in Middelstum follow the pattern of a radially laid-out wierde; the streets run downhill from the highest point. The Ommetje Middelstum walking route starts at Borg Ewsum. The surviving remains of Borg Ewsum include a gun turret dating from 1472 and one of its schathouses.
Markets, Music and Cycling Routes
A regional produce market takes place on the grounds of Op Ewsum on the fourth Saturday of the month from April through September inclusive. A cycling route runs around Warffum and Middelstum and is available in variants of approximately 40 or 55 kilometres. The two approximate distances help you plan a shorter or longer day of cycling. The Sunsation pop festival was founded in Middelstum in 1988. Sunsation’s dance event is one of the oldest annually held dance events in the Netherlands.
