Holiday apartment in Noordlaren – Hiking, Hunebed and Hondsrug
Accommodation in Noordlaren
Hiking between Hunebed, forest and Hondsrug
Noordlaren offers a striking mix of landscape and history within a small area. Ancient burial mounds in the Noordlaarderbos, Hunebed G1, the Korenschoof and historic farmhouses are all located in a village that allows for a variety of day plans. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Noordlaren, you can combine hiking, cycling and cultural activities around specific destinations.
Hunebed G1, also known as De Steenbarg, lies southwest of Noordlaren village centre, near the border with the province of Drenthe, between the valleys of the Drentsche Aa and the Hunze. It can be reached via the sandy track “Weg langs het Hunebed”. Hunebed G1 is the only visible hunebed in the province of Groningen.
The Noordlaarder hiking route is approximately 6.5 kilometres long and takes about two hours. It starts and ends at the car park by the harbour of Noordlaren and can be extended via a route through the Besloten Venen. This allows you to choose between a compact loop and an extended hike.
The hiking route through the Noordlaarderbos is 5.8 kilometres long and takes 1 hour and 9 minutes. The forest contains ancient burial mounds dating from before the Middle Ages, at least 2,500 years old. The route also passes the Galgenberg, a prominent hill where criminals were once executed.
Village history and visible culture
The Korenschoof is a grain mill built in 1849 and was designated a Rijksmonument, together with the adjacent sheds, in 1973. It is still regularly operated by a volunteer miller. On Zuinigstraat stands a farm of the hall-house type with structural elements dating from the 17th century; in the centre, on the picturesque Kerkstraat, there is an Oldambtster farmhouse dating from around 1850.
On the Hunzedal and Hondsrug hiking route, the Bartholomeuskerk Noordlaren is a route location; the route includes variants of 12 or 7.5 kilometres. During services, the Bartholomeüskerk is open for viewing on Sunday afternoons. An information board can be found in Noordlaren along the Levend verleden van Haren cycling route.
Cycling routes through varied landscapes
In the Midlaren-Noordlaren area, the Hondsrug is barely 2.5 kilometres wide; precisely because of this limited width, the variety of landscapes is particularly great. The short Rondje Zuidlaardermeer cycling route is 22 kilometres long. On this route, you can return to the starting point after Noordlaren by electric bicycle ferry or cycle an additional loop around the Onnerpolder and Westerbroeksemadepolder. A 12-kilometre forest loop and/or a 16-kilometre polder loop can extend the cycling route.
The different route lengths provide practical guidance when choosing a holiday apartment in Noordlaren. Short hikes, longer variants and extendable cycling routes allow you to shape your stay around nature, activity and local history without committing to just one way of exploring.
