Church, Garden and Mill
St. Peter's Church in Pieterburen is Gothic in design; its chancel is higher than the nave. An artistically carved triumphal arch separates the chancel from the nave. The replacement tower of St. Peter's Church was built in 1805 and had two adjoining rooms that served as prison cells. The church is also part of the “Grootste Museum van Nederland”.
Domies Toen also adds a special historical accent to the village. The garden includes a Slingertoen garden, which was laid out in the English landscape style in 1881. Another notable year can be found at the De Vier Winden windmill in Pieterburen: it dates from 1846. Those who enjoy combining buildings, garden spaces and regional history during a stay will find several different ways to explore the area here.
Hiking the Pieterpad
The Pieterpad runs from Pieterburen on the northern Groningen Wadden Coast to the Sint-Pietersberg in South Limburg. The route is divided into 26 stages, which are on average 15 to 22 kilometres long. This gives Pieterburen a clear connection to a long-distance hike, while the different stage lengths provide you with concrete guidance when planning.
Discover the Wadden Coast
The Waddenkust Visitor Centre is housed in a school building dating from 1867. There, the various biotopes along the Wadden Coast and the importance of the Wadden Sea as a refuelling station during bird migration are presented. A wet room complements the facilities: children can conduct experiments there and examine plant and animal life under a microscope. All mudflat excursions and activities begin at the Waddenkust Visitor Centre.
The centre also provides a fixed point of orientation for cyclists and mudflat hikers. The De Klutenplas cycling route is 12 or 36 kilometres long, starts at the Waddenkust Visitor Centre in Pieterburen and leads past brackish-water nature reserves, through villages and over dikes. Various mudflat hikes can be booked through Wadlopen Pieterburen. From Pieterburen, you can reach the mudflats of the Wadden Sea directly behind the dike. At 6 kilometres, the Zwerftocht is the easiest mudflat hike.
