Hills, Water and Trails

The N70 Natuurwandelroute leads over eight hills through the hilly forests of Berg en Dal and the surrounding area. Along the way, there are views over polders, floodplains and the river landscapes of the Waal and Rhine. The Dorpsommetje Ubbergen-laag is shorter: this 3.7-kilometre walk passes through the low-lying, damp part of Ubbergen, the spring area and the polder of Beek.

The starting point of the Dorpsommetje is a five-minute walk from the Ubbergen – Ubbergse Holleweg bus stop on bus route 80 between Nijmegen and Millingen. The Beken, bronnen en bergen route follows spring water through streams towards the Ooijpolder and uses the pedestrian ferry across the Meertje. For cyclists, the Nijmegen–Beek stage of the Via Romana leads to Roman sights in the Ooijpolder and along the glacial ridge near Beek-Ubbergen.

Architecture and Local History

De Refter is a neo-Gothic chapel and boarding-school complex built between 1910 and 1916, with stained-glass windows in the choir. It was built in 1910 by the architect J.H. (Jean) van Groenendael and stands on a steep slope in the former upper garden of Huis Ubbergen.

Dennenheuvel was built between 1899 and 1902 in a blend of the English country-house style and Art Nouveau. Its well-preserved interior, richly decorated with Art Nouveau motifs, is exceptionally rare in the Netherlands. Torensigt preserves the gentlemen’s room and library of Dommer van Poldersveldt. In a park in Beek-Ubbergen, a statue of a washerwoman commemorates the many laundries that once operated in the village.

Outings for Different Interests

The Werelderfgoedwandeling Neder-Germaanse Limes initially passes through Heerlijkheid Beek, with steep uphill and downhill sections, and continues to the Kleine Bartholomeuskerkje at Nieuwe Holleweg 2 in Beek-Ubbergen. The Landschapmuseum features eleven unique miniature landscapes and a walk through the Palland demonstration area. From Nijmegen railway station, German bus route 58 towards Emmerich Bahnhof runs to the “Beek Sportpark” stop; from there, it is approximately a fifteen-minute walk to the Landschapmuseum.
