Waterways around Terkaple

The Terkaplester Puollen are part of the Natura 2000 area. They are connected to the Goëngarijpsterpoelen, the Terhornsterpoelen and the Sâltpoel. From the Terkaplester Puollen, boats can travel via the Akkrumer Rak to, among other places, Akkrum and Heerenveen. Alongside the open landscape, an extensive network of waterways is therefore a defining feature of the village.

A specific way to experience Terkaple on foot is provided by the 14 km Sneekermeerzicht hiking route. It leads from Terherne through the meadows to Terkaple and back towards Terherne. Those who prefer to travel on the water can choose the 16.1 km Terherne–Terkaple–Akmarijp–Goingarijp boating route. It runs through Terkaple via the Lange Sleat, Syltsjesleat and Lykfeart. The 14 kilometres make the hiking route a clearly defined day section. The 16.1 kilometres of the boating route provide a separate timeframe for planning a day on the water and complement the hiking section described through their different form of travel. Both routes can also be planned as separate excursions.

Church and village history

Today's Terkaple Church was built in 1854 on the foundations of an earlier chapel. The church floor contains gravestones belonging to the noble Van Oenema and Van Roorda families from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The church is taking part in Tsjerkepaad in 2026. From 8 August to 29 August, it is open daily from 13:30 to 17:00. In addition, the church is generally open and unattended on most days. Tsjerkepôle, where the church and vicarage stand, is an idyllic, tree-filled place in an otherwise relatively open setting. This contrast between sheltered greenery and expansive landscape is precisely what shapes Terkaple's cultural character.

Islands, bridge and other destinations

The island of Rookoepolle is part of the immediate surroundings of Terkaple; the island of Lange Warren is located near the village. The island of Rakkenpolle is also nearby. De Potten park is located in the immediate vicinity of Terkaple. The Heerenzijl bridge also provides a distinctive landmark: it lies between the Frisian water sports villages of Terkaple and Terherne on Hearresyl-Weg.

For cultural excursions, the regional view extends further. The Fries Museum, the Oldehove monument and the historic Eise Eisinga Planetarium are located in the wider region around Terkaple. The Vermaning gemeente Sneek church is located near the village. Different types of holiday days can be combined: waterways and meadows for activity, the church and Tsjerkepôle for history, and other destinations in the Frisian surroundings for cultural variety.
