A village centre steeped in Frisian history
The historic village centre lies west of the Hegedyk, a former sea dike that protected people from the waters of the Middelzee. Northwest of the Johanneskerk is a separate family cemetery belonging to the Bumas, a noble family from the village. The cemetery in Weidum dates from 1826 and is an early example in Friesland of a cemetery laid out outside the village centre. Together with the church, this creates a historic area where different layers of time meet within a small space.
Memorial sites and landscape details
The war memorial for mr. S.M. van Haersma Buma is a two-metre-high square column with a carved flame; it stands on a war grave. It commemorates mr. van Haersma Buma, who died at the Neuengamme concentration camp on 11 December 1942. The AMERIKAANSE WINDMOTOR is a landmark on the edge of Weidum’s truncated terp. It was built in the early 1930s to drain the lower-lying pastureland in the village centre of Weidum that had been created by removing soil from the terp.

The Bangma Partij and the women’s PC are among the events held at the Kaatsveld Weidum of KV Nije Kriich. Nije Kriich also organizes various Kaatsen matches for its members, the federation and the KNKB. The Pluktún Weidum behind the church offers a different experience: garden shears are provided, and visitors may pick blooming, organically grown flowers themselves.
