Woudagemaal and wide-open landscapes
The Woudagemaal in Lemmer is the largest steam pumping station ever built and at the same time the largest steam-powered pumping station still in operation. Since 1998, the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Woudagemaal includes the dikes along the IJsselmeer and the surrounding wide-open pastureland. The Woudagemaal visitor centre offers insights through an interactive exhibition; guided tours of the engine room and the adjoining boiler house are also available.
For a day shaped by cultural history, it is worth looking at further specific places. Museum Lemmer displays a special collection of Lemster carved ceramics in six showcases and has models of Lemsteraken, Botters and Schouwen. The Fiskerhaven is Lemmer’s museum harbour and is home to Lemsteraken, which reflect Lemmer’s rich maritime history. The lock keeper’s houses, the lock and the two small buildings of the Lemster Sluis together form a Rijksmonument. The distinctive small buildings on either side of the Lemster Sluis date from 1888.
Walking trails and cycling experiences
Lemmer can also be explored on foot over different distances. The Dorpskuier is a four-kilometre walking trail that begins at the VVV in Lemmer. Rondje Dok is an approximately two-kilometre walking trail through the centre of Lemmer. The circular route passes historic buildings protected as national or municipal monuments. The different route lengths help you plan your preferred pace for the day. For longer cycling experiences, the Zuiderzeeroute leads from Lemmer in Friesland to Kraggenburg in the Noordoostpolder.
Water experiences on the IJsselmeer
The historic LE50 offers trips on the IJsselmeer from Lemmer. In bad weather, trips take place on inland waterways. This provides a specific alternative within the LE50 offering when planning a day on the water. Together with Lemsterstrand and its location on the IJsselmeer, this maritime connection shapes the selection of experiences you can consider around Lemmer.
Islands and parks in the surrounding area
Rakkenpolle is an island in the vicinity of Lemmer, as is Leijepolle. In the wider regional surroundings of Lemmer are also the islands of Langehoekspolle and Nieuwe Kruispolle. Boswachterij Starnumanbossen is a park near Lemmer. Gaasterland is also located near Lemmer and is described as a park. For your regional planning, you can therefore include islands and park landscapes alongside the waterside attractions and those in the town centre.
Festivals with maritime and literary themes
The Lemster Dickens Festijn takes place every two years and features a three-kilometre route through the centre of Lemmer with performances, craftspeople and music. The Lemster Visserijdagen use the centre of Lemmer, including the Fiskerhaven or Museumhaven, as a maritime event venue. The Lemster Visserijdagen have included a street festival and shanty music in Lemmer. During the Lemster Visserijdagen, children up to and including the age of 14 were able to take part in a fishing competition. These different event formats each add their own accents when choosing your holiday days.
In the wider regional surroundings of Lemmer, Crackstate is a castle. De Regenboog is a church in the wider regional surroundings of Lemmer. If you would like to compare other places besides Lemmer, you can find Follega, Bantega, Echten and Delfstrahuizen here.
