Holiday apartment in Follega between remembrance and farm architecture

Follega reveals its character through clear, distinctive traces. The Lancaster Memorial in Follega commemorates the crash of an AVRO Lancaster on 16 December 1943. As a memorial stone with a plaque attached to it, it stands on a concrete slab in a field opposite Straatweg 33. For visitors interested in history, this site connects the memory of a specific event with a clearly identified location. The exact date gives the memorial a firmly defined historical context.

De Drie Kogels also combines history with visible farm architecture. De Drie Kogels is a former village inn that is now used as a farm. The former inn owes its name to the skirmishes fought by a civic guard near Follega in 1799. The building has windows with six panes on all façades; it also features a hipped roof, a dormer with a triangular gable ornament and a barn partly made of wood.

Straatweg 29 is a head-and-body farmhouse under a gabled roof between gables with chimneys fitted with chimney plates. Zeldenrust is a comparatively old head-neck-and-body farmhouse in Follega, built from yellow bricks. For those interested in architecture, the differences in roof shapes, bricks and roof structures are readily apparent. The farm views therefore invite close observation: at Straatweg 29, the gabled roof and chimney plates stand out, while at Zeldenrust, it is the yellow bricks and the head-neck-and-body form. For visitors interested in culture, specific individual features take center stage in Follega: the Lancaster Memorial, De Drie Kogels and the farmhouses at Straatweg 29 and Zeldenrust.

Seasonal and route-based experiences

A seasonal highlight is provided by De Lytse Brekken’s blueberry pick-your-own facility. During the harvest season, visitors can pick blueberries themselves and then pay by weight. For this agricultural experience, the harvest season is the decisive timeframe. The facility is also open to visitors who are not staying on the premises. After picking the berries yourself, you pay by weight.

The Wetter Route adds a different route-related feature. The Wetter Route includes the Klokkenstoel Follega as one of its stops. The Follegasloot was formerly an important waterway between the Groote Brekken and the Tjeukemeer.

For winter, IJsbaan Follega offers a clear but conditional focus. It lies behind the Follegasleat near the bridge and is managed by the Winterwille skating club. When the ice is safe, IJsbaan offers opportunities for skating and sledding. Its location behind the Follegasleat near the bridge helps with orientation; the ice condition limits both activities. For those interested in winter sports, skating and sledding on safe ice are the two main options.

For planning purposes, the harvest season and safe ice can be taken into account as different prerequisites.

For additional destinations, you can also include Lemmer, Echten, Delfstrahuizen and Bantega in your plans.
