Holiday apartment in Oude Bildtzijl between history and landscape

Oude Bildtzijl shows how local history, water management, landscape and local encounters can shape a journey. The sluis van Ouwe Syl, the protected village landscape and paths into the surrounding area offer different perspectives on the village. When you choose a holiday apartment in Oude Bildtzijl, you can therefore plan your days according to your personal interests: with culture and architecture, a walking tour of the village, landscape experiences or insights into local produce.

Culture in the Village Center

In the center of Oude Bildtzijl, Aerden Plaats is a visitor center. The Archaeological Base at Aerden Plaats provides information about the history of this area's origins. In addition, Aerden Plaats presents a changing group exhibition by artists from the region. The Julianakerk is also one of the village's defining cultural sites: it was built in 1806 and expanded in 1860. The church takes part in the Bildtse Kerkenroute and the Friese Tsjerkepaad. This allows a stay in Oude Bildtzijl to be combined with architecture, regional art and the history of the landscape.

Lock, Church and Waterways

The sluis van Ouwe Syl is the natural center of Oude Bildtzijl. The wooden lock was built in 1507 as part of a large-scale land reclamation project. Its history points to the importance of water in the development of the area. At the same time, the lock remains connected to shipping to this day: boats can use it to reach the Wadden Sea and then travel back inland. Together with the Julianakerk, it creates a village landscape in which sacred architectural history and water management can be seen side by side.

Dike Country and Nature

The 14-kilometer-long Oudebildtdijk runs west of Oude Bildtzijl. Characteristic dike houses and winkelhaak farmhouses stand along the dike, their distinctive shapes drawing attention to the built landscape. South of Oude Bildtzijl, you can walk into the arable fields. In the nearby Noard-Fryslân Bûtendyks nature reserve, outside the breeding season, it is possible to move freely through the area. The range of experiences therefore extends from peaceful paths through the fields to the open landscape of the nature reserve.

For a longer tour, the 12.4-kilometer Oudebildtzijl | Rondjes om de kerken route is available. It starts at TOP Oudebildtzijl, passes through Nieuwe Bildtzijl and continues in the direction of the Noard Fryslân Bûtendyks nature reserve. The Dorpswandeling Ouwe Syl also starts at the TOP and leads through the protected village landscape of Oude Bildtzijl. During this village walk, you can admire the completely restored Pyp in the center of Oude Bildtzijl. The protected village landscape preserves the atmosphere of times gone by and makes the walk a discovery of streetscapes, architectural history and village life.

Local Experiences Along the Way

The Dorpswandeling Ouwe Syl passes the D’Ouwe Sylster Schapenmelkerij en Kaasboerderij van Familie Elgersma. There, visitors can use a milk dispenser and buy cheese and dairy products. Another special stop is Voedselbos Ouwe-Syl, a food forest where people of all ages can meet and work together.
