Discover Blija – Wadden Sea, History and Culture
Accommodation in Blija
Blija combines history, a coastal landscape that can be observed changing, insights into craftsmanship and destinations in the wider surrounding region. Those planning a holiday apartment in Blija can therefore tailor their stay to different interests: historical traces, creative work or exploring the Wadden Sea and salt marshes. This creates a destination with multiple perspectives, without allowing a single theme to shape the entire experience.

Church history at Sint-Nicolaaskerk
At Sint-Nicolaaskerk Blije, history can be viewed through a specific building and a place of remembrance. The tower dates from the 13th century; the present church replaced an earlier church at the beginning of the 16th century. The cemetery contains the grave of an unknown RAF sergeant who was washed ashore on the salt marshes near Ferwert on 14 July 1942. Architectural history and a single historical place of remembrance stand side by side here.
Wadden Sea, salt marshes and the Terp fan de Takomst
The Terp fan de Takomst focuses attention on a landscape that is constantly changing. Outside the breeding season, from 16 July to 14 March, it can be experienced up close. From there, visitors can see how the Wadden Sea and salt marshes are constantly changing under the influence of wind and tides. The Terp fan de Takomst also hosts concerts, readings and experiments with salt-tolerant crops. Nature observation and cultural events thus come together in a special location.
A 1.2-kilometre-long unpaved path leads from the Zeedijk through the salt marshes to the Terp fan de Takomst. Another perspective is offered by the 12.5-kilometre-long “Van Historische Terp naar Terp van de Toekomst” route. It follows the history of Hegebeintum and Blije. For your planning, the short path and the longer route represent two different scales: a specific destination in the landscape or a more extensive route with a historical focus.
Textile printing and garden at Kleine-Lijn
Kleine-Lijn in Blije combines a textile printing workshop, a shop and a tea and dye-plant garden. During a visit, guests can look into the studio, where textile designs are printed on linen, cotton, wool and silk. The place is therefore interesting for travellers who want to focus their day not only on landscape and history, but also on materials, designs and production processes.
Castles, museums and beaches in the surrounding area
The wider surrounding area of Blija is home to Rinsma State, a castle, and Toutenburg, a castle. The Natuurmuseum Fryslân, a museum, and the Fries Museum, a museum, are also located in this wider area. In the vicinity of Blija are Tempeltje Ids Willemsma, a natural arch, and Het Hen, a beach. Het Rif and Westerstrand are beaches in the wider surrounding area of Blija. These different destinations offer additional opportunities to shape your stay around architectural history, museum culture and the coastal landscape.
